Bordighera W854hand painted reproduction

From a height, pines with sinuous trunks frame the ancient city of Bordighera and reveal only a narrow strip of Mediterranean. This oil on canvas measuring 65 × 80.8 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 84, belongs to the Potter Palmer Collection of the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1922.426.

Look at the work

The village and the sea appear behind a screen of pine trees

The trees in the foreground cross the composition diagonally and in curves. Between their trunks, the ocher, pink and cream houses tighten around the bell tower; further on, the blue of the sea almost meets that of the sky.

The greens of the foliage are crossed by yellows, blues and purples. The city receives warmer accents, but its shapes remain fragmented: it appears bathed in light rather than drawn building by building.

In W854, Monet chooses not to offer a panoramic view: Bordighera remains partially hidden, discovered through the vegetation that had initially disconcerted him.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A view from the top

The composition belongs to a group of three views where Monet gradually climbs the height. In the Chicago version, pine trees take the lead and the city becomes a secondary motif between the branches.

02

A bell tower moved during work

The Art Institute's technical study revealed a first position of the bell tower to the right of the central trunk. Monet places it on the left in order to improve the readability of the village through the plant screen.

03

The version specifies W854

The 65 × 80.8 cm format, inventory 1922.426 and reference Wildenstein 854 identify the painting from the Potter Palmer Collection, now presented in Chicago.

Composition01

Trunks that build the entire framing

Twisted pines form an irregular arch around the city. Their position, thickness and intervals must remain accurate to maintain the balance between obstruction and opening.

Color02

A Mediterranean reduced to a few blues

The sea is barely visible but essential: its deep blue cools the roofs and greens in the foreground. Making it too wide or too bright would change the hierarchy of the scene.

Matter03

A surface between reserve and impasto

Examination of the museum shows a network of keys sometimes revealing the preparation, then thicker layers on the trunks and foliage. This alternation gives the vegetation its relief.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Art Institute of Chicago documents Bordighera, oil on canvas from 1884, 65 × 80.8 cm, inventory 1922.426, Potter Palmer Collection and Wildenstein 854.

Stay01

Almost three months on the Riviera

Arriving alone in January 1884 after a first trip with Renoir, Monet extended a stay planned for three weeks and sent forty-five paintings to Paris before his return in April.

Viewpoint02

The città alta seen from a hill

The ancient village and its bell tower are observed from the heights. Monet prefers to integrate them with local pines rather than isolate them like a conventional tourist view.

Signature03

Claude Monet 84

The signature and date are written at the bottom left in a dark red-brown paint, in contact with the foliage in the foreground.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version 1922.426, Wildenstein 854
  • The curved pines that filter the view of the village
  • The bell tower and the warm facades in the center
  • The thin strip of Mediterranean behind the città alta
