The Voorzaan opens like a very wide strip of water under a bright sky. A dark boat with a red sail enters from the left, while other sailboats and several mills punctuate the horizon. In this small, extremely elongated format, Monet contrasts the presence close to the boat with the almost empty expanse of the landscape.

A nearby boat measures the immensity of the Voorzaan

The boat in the foreground is cut off by the left edge. Its almost black hull and red-brown sail form the main contrast of the canvas. A small light figure takes place there; this tiny detail gives an immediate scale to the water stretching out in front of her.

On the horizon line, sails, houses and mills alternate without forming a continuous mass. Their dark silhouettes separate a pale blue sky from a creamy, blue-gray river. Long horizontal touches enliven the water, while boats further away become light triangles.

The landscape seems vast because Monet lets the water breathe between the nearby boat and the distant line of the mills.
