A path among poppies connects an island in the Seine to the bell tower of Vétheuil, although the river remains invisible

The trail begins in the lower right corner, runs along a dark area then folds towards the center. Its gray and green tones do not isolate it from the field; it is above all its curves and the poppies which border it which direct the gaze. In the distance, the church tower becomes the arrival point of this movement.

Monet paints from an island in the Seine, but a row of poplars hides the water. The trees on the right almost exceed the frame and give a vertical depth, while the central foliage opens windows onto the houses. The sky, very ample, balances this dense vegetation with moving blues and whites.

The apparent continuity of the field up to the village is a visual construction: between the two is the Seine, entirely hidden by poplars.

Its curve avoids a frontal climb towards the bell tower. It makes the eye hesitate between the flowers, the trees and the village, giving the landscape a progressive depth.

Their row hides the river but signals its presence by the alignment of the bank. The highest trunks, placed on the right, frame the sky without enclosing the view.

The bell tower remains small but perfectly readable

Its light shape stands out in the central opening, between the darker trees. It gives a precise geographical reference and measures the distance from the island's field.

Their summit approaches the upper edge and accentuates the vertical format. Trees that are too short would weaken the relationship between the ground, the village and the big sky.

Preserve poppies as accents

Reds should remain scattered in greens, sharper in the foreground and rarer in the distance. A continuous carpet would eliminate distance differences.

The Met notice states that Monet painted from the island despite the appearance of a continuous landscape. The river, placed between the field and Vétheuil, disappears behind a line of poplars.

The path visually leads to the church tower

The path visible at the bottom right builds a flexible diagonal towards the village. It gives a concrete link between the spectator and the bell tower without showing the crossing of the water.

Legacy of Julia W. Emmons in 1956

The painting is numbered 56.135.1 in the European Paintings Department. The Met exhibits it today in Gallery 818 along with several other views of the area.
