From the other bank of the Seine, Vétheuil appears behind a screen of poplars: the church tower, the light houses, a boat and a silhouette with an umbrella emerge in a light in midsummer. Painted in 1880, this panoramic oil on canvas measuring 60 × 100 cm belongs to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin under number AI 551 and corresponds to Wildenstein 609.
Look at the work
The canvas superimposes three very different bands. Clear water and its reflections occupy the bottom; a dense frieze of poplars then masks part of the houses; finally, an immense sky, worked by large white and blue clouds, gives the panoramic format all its amplitude.
A small boat carrying two passengers crosses the river, slightly to the left of the center. On the nearby bank, a woman dressed in white and wearing an umbrella punctuates the right. These tiny figures provide a scale and prevent the landscape from becoming an abstract view of colorful masses.
The bell tower of Vétheuil is not placed in the center like a monument: it emerges between the trees, integrated into the vertical rhythm of the poplars and the general vibration of the light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The very horizontal relationship brings this work closer to a panorama. However, Monet avoids monotony thanks to the uneven verticals of the trees, the bell tower and the two figures separated by the river.
Poplars don't just serve as a setting for the village. They interrupt the facades, create shards of walls and make the church appear in fragments, like a vision captured from the opposite bank.
The sky is not isolated above the landscape: its blues and whites are found in the Seine, the roofs and even the green shadows. This circulation unifies the three planes.

The single image comes from a high definition photograph of the canvas at the Alte Nationalgalerie. The source file is limited to 3,000 × 1,770 px then encoded as a real WebP, without oversampling.
The upper half should remain bright and very open. Clouds that are too dark or too detailed would reduce the size of the format and weigh down the village.
Their height, spacing and varied greens are essential. Turning them into regular alignment would make W609's natural breathing disappear.
These patterns are deliberately small. Their presence must remain perceptible without becoming narrative to the point of competing with the bell tower and the valley.
Documented benchmarks
The Alte Nationalgalerie preserves Ansicht von Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 60 × 100 cm, inventory AI 551 and catalog Wildenstein 609.
The painting was purchased under the direction of Hugo von Tschudi thanks to a donation from Karl Freiherr von der Heydt, at a time when French impressionism remained little represented in German museums.
Established in the village since 1878, Monet gradually abandoned scenes of modern sociability to explore the banks, seasons and atmospheric effects of the valley at greater length.
The bell tower of Notre-Dame and the houses are observed from the opposite bank. The river and the nearby vegetation thus transform an architectural subject into a landscape of depth and light.
