Artwork description
Claude Monet · The sailboats of the Zaan in 1871 · Nationalmuseum Stockholm
A very stretched panorama shows the Voorzaan under an immense sky. On the left, a green bank juts out into the water; in the center and right, several sailboats pass at different distances. The large black sail becomes the focus of the painting, while the clear touches of the river retain an impression of space and wind.

Look at the work
The lower bank occupies the lower left corner. Its clear greens and inclined reeds enter the water through a broken line. Behind it, small silhouettes of mills and masts stand out against the horizon, recalling the industrial landscape of Zaandam without closing the space.
The large central boat carries an almost black, slightly inflated sail. Around it, gray, white and orange sails create several depths. On the right, a small boat and its two figures advance near the viewer; their warm color contrasts with the beiges and grays of the water.
In this exceptionally large format, the boats become a series of vertical signs placed between sky and water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The sky occupies more than half the height and amplifies the impression of wind. The shore and boats remain grouped near the lower edge.
Its black-brown immediately focuses the eye. The smaller sails accompany it without competing with its mass.
Yellows, beiges, grays and mauves are laid in small horizontal commas. They suggest surface wrinkles rather than continuous reflection.
Reference image
The unique reference comes from the official IIIF service of the Nationalmuseum. The source file of 7294 × 3442 px was delivered at 3000 × 1416 px, without oversampling, then converted to WebP for precise zoom.
With 73 cm wide and 34 cm high, the canvas gives navigation an almost cinematic continuity.
The main sail stands out thanks to the pearly grays of the sky. The greens of the bank and the ochres of the water warm everything up.
The IIIF service reveals the curved and superimposed gestures that make up the clouds, as well as the firmer impasto on the sails.
Documented benchmarks
The Nationalmuseum keeps this oil on canvas under inventory NM 2513; it corresponds to number 179 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.
Following the war of 1870-1871, Monet left France, passed through London then stayed in Zaandam with his family from May to October 1871.
The Nationalmuseum indicates that Monet created around twenty-five paintings during this stay, including several views of the mouth and the Zaan delta.
The work entered the Nationalmuseum by a donation from the Friends of the Museum, Nationalmusei Vänner, in 1926. It has since carried the inventory NM 2513.
