The Villas in Bordighera W856hand painted reproduction

On the Strada Romana de Bordighera, a white villa enters the frame from the right, as if the eye passed very close to its facade. Palm trees, agaves and a slender trunk fill the garden; on the left, other villas lead towards the blue-gray mountains. Architecture does not order nature: it is entangled with Mediterranean vegetation that Monet considered fascinating and difficult to paint. This oil on canvas measuring 74 × 92.5 cm, executed in 1884, is preserved at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art under the number 1968.20.5. It corresponds to Wildenstein 856.

Look at the work

The framing cuts through the villa and lets the vegetation govern the scene, between nearby agaves, palm trees and mountains bathed in light

The facade occupies the entire right edge but remains incomplete: a balcony, an arched bay and a few sections of wall are enough to give it its scale. The large blue-green agave spreads out in the foreground. Its array of leaves and the almost vertical trunk placed in the center divide the garden into successive depths.

On the left, the road and the pale villas retreat towards the mountains. The distant blues are echoed in the shadows of the facade and in the fleshy leaves of the agave. Yellows, pinks and warmer greens enliven the ground; this circulation of color brings together architecture, vegetation and relief without enclosing them in fixed contours.

Christie's documentation identifies the Santa Barbara version as Wildenstein 856, painted on site. Monet then produced a quasi-replica, W857, intended for Berthe Morisot after her return to Giverny.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The building is deliberately deprived of its entirety

By cutting off the roof and most of the villa, Monet avoids the descriptive view. Architecture becomes a surface of light that serves as a scale for the plants in the foreground.

02

Agave builds a powerful graphics base

Its leaves start from the same heart and extend in several directions. Their cold blues contrast with the ochres of the ground and guide the gaze towards the balcony then towards the mountain.

03

Depth depends on a succession of interrupted planes

Nearby facade, agaves, road, small villas and mountains overlap without a classic central axis. The large trunk vertically links these planes and prevents the composition from dispersing.

Read this specific version

The single image exactly represents inventory 1968.20.5 and Wildenstein 856. The best reliable file available measures 1200 × 953 px; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Maintain the cut framing of the villa

The building must remain partial, with its straight edge off-camera. Refocusing it would transform W856 into an architectural portrait and lose the impression of proximity.

Color02

Respect the blue green of the agave

Its leaves are not a uniform tropical green. Blues, grays, purples and a few yellows reflect their thickness and distinguish them from the softer foliage of the garden.

Matter03

Keep the mountains light

The distant relief must remain paler and less contrasted than the plants. Too hard contours would remove atmospheric heat and the space between the Strada Romana and the Alps.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art documents The Villas at Bordighera, oil on canvas from 1884, 74 × 92.5 cm, inventory 1968.20.5 and catalog Wildenstein 856.

Campaign01

A solitary stay of seventy-nine days in Bordighera

Monet arrived in January 1884 with the intention of staying a short time, but the light and vegetation kept him for almost three months. He looks for tones capable of rendering nature that he compares to a paradise.

Series02

One of three views close to the Strada Romana

W855, W856 and W857 take over the villas and their vegetation under neighboring arrangements. W856 is the Santa Barbara canvas painted outdoors; W857 is the largest cover made for Berthe Morisot.

Architecture03

The Etelinda, Casa Rossa and Sant'Ampelio villas

La Strada Romana crossed the residential area built around Bordighera. Villa Etelinda, linked to the architect Charles Garnier, appears in this group of paintings where Monet nevertheless favors plants and light over historical details.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 856 version and the 1968.20.5 inventory
  • The white facade strongly cut by the right edge
  • The large blue-green agave in the foreground
  • The road and the villas that lead to the mountains

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This Mediterranean landscape is suitable for a bright living room, veranda or bedroom. An off-white, blue gray or eucalyptus green wall and a light wooden frame extend the atmosphere of Bordighera without competing with agave.
