From the garden of Villa Garnier, Monet places a large palm tree in front of the ancient silhouette of Bordighera and reveals only part of Villa Etelinda on the left edge. This oil on canvas of 61 × 74 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 84, is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-15.

Mediterranean vegetation almost absorbs architecture

The foreground is entirely occupied by bushes, flowers and palm trees which rise towards the buildings. On the left, the light tower of Villa Etelinda is deliberately cut by the frame; in the center, the palm tree serves as an axis; further on, the Città Alta forms an irregular band in the blue air.

The dominant greens are constantly warmed by yellows, pinks, oranges and reds. The facades are not drawn stone by stone: touches of blue, cream and mauve are enough to reveal their volume beyond the garden.

In W857a, Monet shows less the villas than the way exuberant vegetation, blue skies and light facades share the same light.

The garden of Villa Garnier

Charles Garnier, architect of the Paris Opera, had his winter residence built in Bordighera between 1871 and 1873. His garden brought together several hundred plant species.

Three months on the Riviera

The stay, which began at the beginning of 1884, was supposed to be brief but lasted almost three months. Monet seeks motifs capable of reflecting the intense light and unusual vegetation of the Ligurian coast.

Provenance03

Kept in the Monet family

The painting first belonged to the artist's brother, Léon-Pascal Monet, then remained among his descendants before joining the collection now presented in Potsdam.
