Look at the work

A harvest transformed by the setting sun

Van Gogh observed the vineyard after the rain in early November 1888. The low sun made the vines appear red like wine, while the yellow path on the right reflected the light. Several figures cut the rows: they are lean, carry baskets or follow a cart towards the horizon.

The horizon line is placed very high, which gives almost the entire canvas to the vines. The blues and purples in the foreground cool the red-orange mass; further on, a band of blue-green trees separates the vineyard from the yellow and greenish sky.

The work does not restore a natural color: it reflects the dazzling of a humid landscape with a clash of reds, yellows, blues and greens.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Research from the Pushkin Museum shows that Van Gogh modified certain figures and used a very thick material, sometimes directly taken out of the tube.

A high horizon

The thin distant strip allows the surface of the vineyard to dominate. This plunging point of view brings together the composition of Japanese prints admired by Van Gogh.

A material sun

The yellow disc has a clean crimson outline. In the thickest areas, the artist pressed the painting directly onto the canvas and also worked it with his finger.

Revamped figures

The x-ray revealed that a woman first took a man's place on the way. The leaning grape harvester in the foreground was added after the vineyard.

Precisely identify the original work

F495/JH1626 is the painting from the Pushkin Museum presented at the XX exhibition in Brussels in 1890 and purchased by the painter Anna Boch.

Anna Boch bought the painting during the Brussels XX exhibition. This is the work sold during Van Gogh's lifetime, the title and circumstances of which are best documented.

Conservation

A once brighter yellow

The chrome yellow darkened under the effect of ultraviolet light; the sky was therefore originally intended to produce an even more powerful contrast.

From Brussels to Moscow

After Anna Boch, the painting passed through the collection of Ivan Morozov before entering the Pushkin Museum in 1948.
