Vignobles d'Auvers, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Vineyards in AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas

The gnarled vines fill the slope in the foreground, while the white houses of Auvers disperse to the blue hills. Van Gogh transforms the vineyard into a web of green curves, awakened by red poppies and bright blue stakes.

Look at the work

The vines go back towards the houses of Auvers

The vineyard occupies more than half of the canvas. The vines are described by olive green and yellow loops, interspersed with almost vertical blue stakes. On the left, a flowery border of red poppies marks the entrance to the slope.

A clear road and a long blue wall separate the village's crops. Red, green and black roofs alternate between white facades. In the background, the purple-blue hills form a calm strip under a pale blue sky.

The depth arises from the contrast between the organic jumble of the vines in the foreground and the sharper geometry of the walls, houses and hills.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting 8:1953 can be recognized by its spiral vines, its numerous blue stakes, its winding white path and the houses seen from the slope.

01

A loaded material

The Saint Louis Art Museum highlights the heavily charged brushstrokes that build the vines. The paint curls make visible the tortuous growth of the vine.

02

Red as punctuation

The poppies on the left edge respond to the few red roofs of the village. This repetition discreetly leads the gaze from the foreground towards the distance.

03

Limits that dig into space

Wall, road and fences form several oblique lines. They cut out the slope and give a firm structure to the very free vegetation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must differentiate between the loops of the vines, the blue stakes and the boundaries of the plots, while keeping the route to the white houses legible.

  • The vines in thick olive green and yellow curves
  • The blue stakes scattered throughout the vineyard
  • The blue wall and the white path which separate the plans
  • The red poppies and colorful roofs that respond to each other
