Winter landscape at the Falaise Valley W975hand painted reproduction

At the Val de Falaise near Giverny, a bright green meadow and a light fence occupy the foreground. Trimmed trunks, bare trees and a few houses stand in front of ocher, pink and blue-gray hills, under a cold sky crossed by clouds. Signed and dated 1885, this 65.4 × 80.5 cm oil on canvas belongs to the Gabriele and Werner Merzbacher collection; it is on permanent loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich under number MB 0007 and corresponds to Wildenstein 975.

Look at the work

Winter is less visible in the snow than in the bare trees, the dark earth and the oblique light of the hillsides

The barrier enters from the lower right corner and draws a diagonal towards the houses. In front of it, the almost raw green of the meadow contrasts with the strip of brown earth and the vertical trunks in the center. This succession establishes depth without a clearly marked path.

The hillsides occupy the upper right half and receive an orange-yellow light. On the left, thin trees stand out against a blue sky; in the center, darker pruned silhouettes create an almost architectural rhythm around the light roofs.

Monet does not reduce winter to a white range: the season appears in opposition between still green vegetation, leafless trees and slopes warmed by low sun.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A motif close to the new house in Giverny

Monet settled in Giverny in 1883 and immediately explored the surrounding valleys, meadows and hillsides. The Val de Falaise offers it a more steep topography than the wide views of the Seine.

02

Trees pruned as frames

Their cut trunks stand in the center with irregular silhouettes. They give a scale to the houses and contrast their verticality with the long slopes of the hillside.

03

Very frank complements

The saturated green of the meadow responds to the reds and oranges of the ground and the hill. The blues of the sky pass through the shadows, connecting the cold areas of the foreground to the distant trees.

Read this specific version

The single image reproduces the MB 0007 version. The source scanning of 4,848 × 3,966 px is limited to 3,000 × 2,454 px then encoded as a real WebP.

Composition01

Maintain the intense green of the foreground

It may seem unexpected for a winter landscape, but it is one of the distinctive features of W975. Neutralizing it would lose contrast with orange lands.

Color02

Respect the arrangement of the pruned trunks

Their heights and spacing are irregular. They must structure the center without forming a uniform fence or hiding the houses.

Matter03

Keep fragmented material on the hillsides

Yellows, pinks, blues and grays intertwine to indicate dry vegetation, shade and light. Regular flat areas would make the slope too smooth and static.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kunsthaus Zürich documents Winter Landscape at the Val de Falaise, oil on canvas from 1885, 65.4 × 80.5 cm, MB 0007 inventory and Wildenstein 975 catalog.

Registration01

Claude Monet 85, in red lower left

The dated signature is worn directly on the canvas. It unambiguously links this landscape to the first campaigns of Giverny.

Titles02

Also called Val de Falaise in winter

The Kunsthaus file brings together the French, German and English variants of the title. They all designate the W975 version, not to be confused with other neighboring views.

Collection03

A permanent loan to the Kunsthaus since 2021

The work belongs to the Gabriele and Werner Merzbacher collection. It is registered at the museum under number MB 0007 and appears in its catalog raisonné as W975.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 975 version
  • The bright green meadow behind the light fence
  • Trunks pruned in the center
  • The yellow, pink and blue-gray hillsides of the valley

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal landscape is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A gray green, pale ocher or soft blue wall and a natural oak frame extend the seasonal richness without extinguishing the foreground.
