Winter sun in Lavacourt W557hand painted reproduction

An orange sun crosses a blue and pink atmosphere above Lavacourt. The frozen or ice-laden river takes center stage, while the village becomes a distant line almost absorbed by mist.

Look at the work

The sun as a hot spot in the winter of the Seine

Monet places the village of Lavacourt on a high horizontal which separates the sky from the river while connecting them. The lower space, much larger, is punctuated by long, almost parallel touches. They suggest ice, dark waters and reflections without setting a clear limit between frozen surface and liquid surface.

The orange solar disk appears small, but its complementary color transforms the entire canvas. Light roses reach the sky and snow, while blues strengthen in the water and on the bank. On the right, dark trees and bushes close the scene and give additional depth to the misty village.

A single orange note is enough to organize the vast blue harmony: winter becomes less a subject than an experience of light and color.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A composition governed by the horizontal

The Lavacourt bank is placed high. The large foreground allows Monet to develop long and regular touches which accentuate the extent and silence of the Seine in winter.

02

The orange and blue contrast

The sun and some warm reflections respond to the blues of the sky, snow and water. The copy must retain this opposition without artificially increasing the saturation of the solar disk.

03

The canvas left breathing

In the lower part, certain keys are spaced apart and the clear preparation remains perceptible. This reserve lightens the material and contributes to the impression of cold, ice and diffuse glare.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference takes up the image documented by the MuMa for the work A 485. It distinguishes the Lavacourt line, the orange sun, the complementary blues and the long parallel touches of the foreground.

Composition01

A village reduced to a line

Lavacourt separates the sky from the Seine without becoming the main subject of the composition.

Color02

A very controlled complementarity

The orange of the sun warms the roses and intensifies the blues that dominate winter.

Matter03

Long touches in the river

The regular direction of the material gives the surface its width, calm and icy character.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The MuMa connects this canvas to the exceptional winter of 1879 -1880, a period during which Monet observed the frozen Seine daily and then the debacle.

Season01

The harsh winter of 1879 -1880

The Seine freezes deeply before the thaw. Monet followed these transformations around Vétheuil and painted a series of landscapes of snow, ice and debacle.

Viewpoint02

Lavacourt from Vétheuil

From Vétheuil, the sun sets behind the hamlet of Lavacourt, located on the opposite bank of the river.

Collection03

Former Marande collection

The painting is kept at MuMa Le Havre under number A 485 and bears the reference Wildenstein 557.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the solar disk small and bright, without harsh contours or excessive orange.
  • Construct the width of the foreground with long, spaced, parallel keys.
  • Circulate the roses between the sky, the snow and the reflections.
  • Keep the shoreline and trees dark enough to give depth without closing the atmosphere.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This harmony of gray blue, mist pink and soft orange brings calm light to a contemporary living room, bedroom or office. A midnight blue, walnut or patinated silver frame reinforces the complementary contrast without weighing down the vast foreground.
