W12 greyhound headhand painted reproduction

A greyhound with a black collar turns its head to the right, its elongated snout standing out against a purple-brown background. The folded ears, the dark eye and the transitions from white to fawn give this little portrait an attentive presence. Dated around 1862 -1863, this study belongs to Monet's beginnings, when he still worked with animals, game and still lifes.

The greyhound's tense profile focuses all attention on the gaze

The white neck rises from the lower edge and tilts slightly before joining the small head. The muzzle forms a long horizontal, ending in a black nose. This opposition between vertical and horizontal gives a very clear structure to the small format.

Around the eye and ear, Monet combines brown, ocher, black and gray. The chest remains lighter, but warm shadows give it volume. The black collar closes the base of the portrait and separates the dog from the uniform background.

Without decoration or action, the dog's silhouette becomes an exercise in precision: measuring an inclination, a light on the hair and the intensity of a look.
