View of Bennecourt W1125hand painted reproduction

Almost bare young trees raise their fine trunks in front of a winter landscape of muffled blues, greens and mauves. The square format narrows the view of an orchard or an edge, while the dark furrows in the foreground lead towards the barely perceptible houses of Bennecourt. Dated 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 81.5 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Columbus Museum of Art and corresponds to Wildenstein 1125.

Look at the work

A winter landscape built by trunks and furrows

Three main trees rise from the foreground and cross almost the entire height of the painting. Their thin branches stand out against a pale blue sky, without forming a closed silhouette. Further on, a succession of light trunks and purple shapes suggests a wooded depth rather than a panoramic view.

The olive green ground is crossed by brown, purple and dark blue lines which converge towards the center. These diagonals give movement to the square composition. In the background, the hills and buildings remain deliberately indecisive, absorbed by a cold light which unites the landscape.

Monet chooses a time when the trees are neither completely bare nor already deciduous: their network of branches becomes a transparent structure through which the countryside remains visible.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The square as a proximity frame

The almost perfectly square format limits the impression of panorama. The viewer finds himself in front of a fragment of land, placed close enough to the trees so that their trunks become the main axes of the composition.

02

Diagonals that open the ground

The furrows in the foreground do not converge academically. They cross and change color, but their general orientation still leads the gaze towards the light area of the center.

03

A cold, lively range of greens

The blue of the sky passes through the branches and shadows, while the yellow greens of the terrain retain a warmer light. The contrast remains discreet and corresponds to the atmosphere of a transitional season.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1125 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2,284 × 2,272 px, converted from the public file of the same definition without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the fineness of the trunks

Trees must remain slender and irregular. Contours that are too thick or uniform would transform them into a grid and remove the transparency of the undergrowth.

Color02

Preserve mallows in the distance

The hills and houses are not gray. Their lilac, pink and blue notes create atmospheric recoil and avoid a sudden separation from the sky.

Matter03

Keep the grooves visible under the keys

The lines of the ground structure the perspective, but they must remain integrated into the vegetation. Faithful reproduction maintains their fragmented character and brush material.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Columbus Museum of Art presents View of Bennecourt, also known as Trees in Winter: View of Bennecourt, an 1887 square oil on canvas, listed as Wildenstein 1125.

Location01

Bennecourt, on the bank of the Seine opposite Bonnières

Monet has known this part of the valley since his youthful stays. In 1887, he returned to the area around Bennecourt and Bonnières to study the trees, sloping terrain and seasonal changes.

Pattern02

Winter trees rather than topographical views

The village remains almost invisible. The real subject is the relationship between the closely spaced trunks, the ground covered with furrows and the blue countryside which appears throughout.

Composition03

A canvas of equal dimensions

The format of 81.5 × 81.5 cm gives the same importance to vertical and horizontal movements. The trees thus respond to the oblique lines of the terrain in a particularly tight balance.

  • The square format of 81.5 cm
  • The three main trunks in the foreground
  • Purple and brown furrows in the green ground
