From a height northeast of the village, the red and pink roofs of Giverny fill the foreground. Behind them, a thick strip of trees opens onto the Essarts plain and the blue hills of Bennecourt, under a vast pink and turquoise sky. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 66 × 81.6 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1072.

The roofs of Giverny transformed into a mosaic of colors

The houses are cut by the lower edge and observed from a steep dive. Their interlocking roofs form a first dense strip, followed by trees, fields and finally hills. The sky covers almost the upper third.

Reds, pinks, oranges and creams structure the roofs; emerald greens, blues and yellows make up the vegetation. The hills are simplified into long blue bands, while the sky receives wide pearly passages.

Rather than a descriptive panorama, Monet constructs a patchwork of roofs, trees, fields and hills where each shot has its own texture.

The painter sets up his easel on the height northeast of the center. He looks towards the Essarts plain and the Bennecourt hills, about eight kilometers further.

The Coast farm in the foreground

The buildings belong to the owners of the Hôtel Baudy. On the left, behind the first trees, are the houses of Pressoir, an area where Monet has lived since 1883.

A painting long loaned to the New Orleans museum

After several European collections, the work was deposited at the New Orleans Museum of Art from 1977 to March 2018 before its sale at Christie's in November 2018.
