Le pêcher rose, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · March-April 1888 · Arles
The Pink Peach Tree, F404Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A peach tree covered with white and pink flowers unfolds in front of a reed fence; Van Gogh celebrates the first Provençal spring in a pale blue light.
Look at the work
A flowering tree isolated like a portrait
The trunk divides almost in the center and bears a crown of fine branches which fills the sky. Behind him, a long ocher fence closes the orchard; on the left, other trees and a few houses are lost in a bluish mist.
The ground is constructed by parallel touches of blue, green, lilac and white. The flowers are not counted one by one: small light touches are deposited on the dark branches and make the entire silhouette vibrate.
F404 belongs to the series of flowering orchards painted shortly after Van Gogh's arrival in Arles. This version of the Van Gogh Museum should not be confused with the Souvenir de Mauve F394 from the Kroeller-Müller Museum.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Inventory s0025V1962 and references F404/JH1391 precisely identify the large vertical pink peach tree kept in Amsterdam.
An almost frontal tree
The peach tree occupies the majority of the canvas and stands out like a figure, while the fence stabilizes the space behind it.
Flowers in touches
Whites, pinks and yellows are placed in small marks on the brown network of branches, creating a radiance effect rather than a botanical survey.
A cold spring light
Light blue dominates the sky and the ground. The ochres of the fence and trunk provide the necessary warmth without breaking the general coolness.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Van Gogh Museum preserves several orchards in Arles; this sheet concerns the Pink Peach F404 and not the Pink Peach in Flowers F394 dedicated to Anton Mauve.
The Arles Orchards
In the spring of 1888, Van Gogh quickly painted several fruit trees in bloom, fascinated by their light and their relationship with Japanese prints.
A large vertical
With its 80.9 × 60.2 cm, the canvas gives the tree a portrait presence and lets the branches occupy almost the entire sky.
s0025V1962
This inventory number from the Van Gogh Museum allows you to distinguish the painting from other peach, plum and apricot trees of the same spring.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must retain the finesse of the network of branches, the freshness of the bruises and the irregular dispersion of the flowers without weighing down the tree.
- The trunk bifurcated in the center
- White and pink flowers on the branches
- The ocher reed fence
- The blue houses in the distance
- The lilac and green touches of the ground
