A rounded pond occupies the foreground, bordered by a clear meadow and a long row of poplars. A small figure dressed in white settles in the grass while the trees stand out against a blue sky covered with clouds. Painted in 1858 near Le Havre, this view of Rouelles is the first painting that young Monet presents to the public.

A calm pond already announces Monet's attention to reflections

The dark water forms an almost complete curve in the lower half. Its clear bank opens a passage towards the meadow, then towards the poplars which close the space on the horizon. The small white silhouette, placed slightly to the right of the center, gives the scale of the landscape.

Thin trunks alternate with masses of green and brown foliage. Above, the blue, mauve gray and white of the clouds occupy a large part of the canvas. The reflections of the bank and the trees already appear as a second material, less descriptive and more mobile.

Before the big series, Monet already builds the landscape around a surface of water: the real pattern becomes a balance between depth, light and reflection.

The water curve opens the foreground

The pond does not simply cut the meadow: its rounded outline leads the eye from left to right, then brings it back towards the figure and the trees. This flexible shape gives scale to a modest site.

Poplars form a natural architecture

Their regular alignment stabilizes the composition while varying the heights, spacing and density of the foliage. The sky remains visible between the trunks, which avoids a compact plant screen.

A youthful bill already focused on the outdoors

The volumes are more constructed than in later impressionist works, but the rapid passages of sky, water and foliage testify to the learning received through contact with Eugène Boudin.

The contours of the pond alternate grassy overhangs and darker passages. An ellipse that is too regular would cause the natural character of the place to be lost.

Green comes from yellow to brown

Meadow, poplars and reflections do not use a single green. Illuminated areas tend towards ocher, dense foliage towards brown and shadows towards blue.

Matter03

The small figure remains an accent of light

Its white catches the eye without becoming a detailed portrait. Its size and position must remain exactly subordinate to the landscape.

Beginnings01

The first painting that Monet shows to the public

The MuMa du Havre indicates that the painting was accepted at the municipal exhibition of 1858. The archives preserve the notice, the list of works exhibited and the receipt signed by the young artist.

Signature02

A painting signed "O. Monet"

Monet still uses the initial of his first name, Oscar. This youthful signature accompanies a work created before his departure for Paris and before the official birth of impressionism.

History03

Preserved by Monet for almost twenty years

According to MuMa documentation, the artist keeps this view from its beginnings until 1877. Long forgotten, it was then rediscovered in Japan with its historical importance intact.
