A pale pink walkway curves in front of a curtain of silver-green willows. Under its arch, the pool is arranged in strips of pink, yellow and white flowers, separated by brown, turquoise and lilac reflections. This almost square version from 1899 is lighter than many views of the garden: the bridge, vegetation and water remain clearly readable without losing the vibration of the touch.

Look at the work

Clear footbridge separates vertical foliage from water covered with small flowers

The bridge crosses the composition slightly above the center. Its balustrade is not white: Monet mixes pink, mauve, light green and a few blue lines. On the left, the willow branches fall in long, tight touches; on the right, a brighter tree opens the bottom with cold yellows and purples that give air around the structure.

The pool is organized into several horizontal planes. The flowers are small under the arch, then become wider and more separated towards the lower edge. Between them, red-brown bands mark the reflections of the bridge and the plants. This contrast between plant verticals, architectural curve and aquatic horizontals maintains the depth of the painting.

The footbridge is the most recognizable motif, but the perspective arises above all from the progressive enlargement of the water lilies towards the foreground.

A balustrade colored by its environment

The rails combine pale pink, blue, sea green and purple. Painting them a uniform white would destroy their integration into the foliage and the softness of the light.

A willow built by long vertical commas

On the left, the keys almost all go down in the same direction, but change value from dark green to creamy yellow. Their rhythm forms a curtain without becoming mechanical.

Flowers grouped in successive layers

Pink and white water lilies are not scattered randomly. They form interrupted bands whose width and spacing increase as they approach the bottom of the canvas.

A work included in the collections in 1948

The museum's electronic record lists 1948 as the date the painting entered. The current identification, dimensions and inventory number are those published by the Department of European Arts of the 19th and 20th centuries.

1899 series03

The water garden becomes a self-contained subject

In 1899, Monet undertook a first major series around the Japanese footbridge and the pond. Here, it still retains the landmarks of the real garden, but the water already occupies the entire lower half and transforms the plants into reflected colors.
