À propos de l’œuvre

Charrette avec bœuf rouge et blanc, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1884 · Nuenen

Cart with red and white beef, F38Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A red ox magpie waits in front of a heavy cart whose dark Ferris wheel occupies the entire left side. The harness, stretchers and masses of the vehicle transform this rural scene into a study of strength and structure.

Look at the work

The animal and the wheel share the entire weight of the image

The wheel draws an almost complete circle on the left, while the ox advances its head towards the right edge. Between them, the black stretchers create a rigid and strongly horizontal connection.

The whites of the coat are loaded with yellow and pink; the red parts become orange-brown. The black green background isolates the silhouette, while a lighter area behind the cart suggests the opening of the landscape.

Cart with red and white ox F38/JH504 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 56.7 × 82.5 cm painted in Nuenen in July 1884. It bears the inventory KM 110,256.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition brings together two forces: the mechanical circle of the wheel and the living body of the ox. The thick contours and dark light contrasts give them an almost monumental presence.

01

The wheel acts as a second figure

Its black circle, spokes and hub take up as much space as the ox; it immediately gives the scale and weight of the vehicle.

02

The stretchers connect the two masses

Two long dark lines cross the side of the animal to the cart, making visible the effort that the team will have to transmit.

03

The coat concentrates all the light

The cream, yellow and red pink areas stand out brightly from an almost black background and lead the gaze from the rump to the muzzle.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum documents F38/JH504, inventory KM 110,256, July 1884 and a format of 56.7 × 82.5 cm.

Pair

A second cart with black beef

Van Gogh painted a related composition with a black ox at the same time, now kept at the Portland Art Museum.

Subject

An essential tool of the farming world

The cart and the draft animal belong to the agricultural life observed in Nuenen, in the same way as the sowers, planters and weavers.

Picture

A real photograph of the work

The visual reference used here comes from a shot of the painting during its presentation in Budapest in 2013.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the powerful circle of the wheel, the black stretchers, the red and cream spots of the ox, the harness, the light muzzle and the depth of the black green background.

  • The Ferris wheel and its dark rays
  • The two horizontal stretchers
  • The clear plates on the side of the ox
  • Head down and the white muzzle
  • The light passage behind the cart
