The Voorzaan stretches under an overcast sky, almost as pale as water. On the island of Westerhem, three mills and a series of houses form a thin line on the horizon. Two sailboats cross this vast light, and Monet reduces the Dutch landscape to a few silhouettes, variations of gray and accents of red-brown.

Sky and water envelop a line of mills

The land occupies only a very narrow strip. The De Bakker, De Roode Leeuw and De Notenboom mills emerge above low houses, with the Kattegat footbridge on the left. Their shapes are precise enough to locate the place, but simplified enough to remain subject to changing light.

In the center and right, two boats with red-brown sails cross the Voorzaan. The closest stands out in front of the island, the second slides into a lighter area. The water retains few marked reflections: wide cream and pinkish gray passages give the sensation of a windy day under a heavy sky.

By placing the landscape on an almost fragile line, Monet makes the sky and water the true dimensions of Zaandam.
