À propos de l’œuvre
Femme avec une bêche, vue de dos, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · July 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Peasant digging seen from behind, F95Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A peasant woman seen from behind bows on her spade, her shoulders, skirt and legs united in the same thrust. Van Gogh isolates the gesture in an almost empty field and gives agricultural work a monumental presence.
Look at the work
A lonely worker, bent over the earth
The green hat, rounded back and long striped skirt build a compact silhouette. The handle of the spade descends diagonally to the left, while the rear foot stabilizes the effort.
The field is reduced to a few bands of ocher, yellow and green. The very high horizon never looks away from the figure, whose dark clothes stand out forcefully.
Peasant Digging Back View F95/JH827 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel painted in Nuenen in July 1885. The work measures 41.7 × 32.3 cm and belongs to the Art Gallery of Ontario under the number 97/156.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh builds the peasant woman with large green, blue and almost black masses. The simplification of the decor transforms daily action into a very concentrated study of weight, balance and movement.
The curve of the back controls the gaze
The leaning bust forms a continuous arc from the cap to the waist. This large curve immediately makes the physical tension of the work perceptible.
The skirt becomes a column of folds
Vertical olive, gray and blue bands shape the garment. They give volume to the figure and counterbalance the diagonal of the spade.
The field remains deliberately summary
The horizontal touches of the ground and the clear horizon situate the scene without the anecdote of a detailed landscape. All the energy remains focused on the peasant woman.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Toronto Museum precisely identifies this painting by the references F95, JH827 and 97/156. Its support combines an original canvas with a wooden panel which stiffens it.
A figure from the Nuenen peasant cycle
In 1885, Van Gogh increased his studies as sowers, diggers and peasant women in order to understand their postures before and after The Potato Eaters.
Face's not the subject
The woman is shown from behind and almost without visible identity. The artist favors the body over work, its worn clothing and the pressure exerted on the tool.
A work preserved in Toronto
The Art Gallery of Ontario preserves the painting under number 97/156 and specifies its dimensions of 41.7 × 32.3 cm.
