Look at the work

Sewing in window light

The seated figure stands out in front of the regular grid of tiles. The leaning bust and forearms form a triangle around the work, while the chair and the table edge keep the scene in everyday space.

Whites are never pure: they mix cream, gray and yellow. Around them, Van Gogh superimposes browns, greens and colored blacks so that the hands and the piece of fabric become the real focus of the painting.

Woman sewing in front of a window F71/JH719 is an oil on canvas of 43.2 × 34.2 cm, painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0007V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The window acts as both a light source and a geometric structure. Van Gogh contrasts his rectilinear tiles with the curved body of the seamstress and the flexibility of the fabric.

01

The tiles form a stable grid

Vertical and horizontal uprights frame the head. This calm architecture makes the inclination of the bust and the small movement of the hands more noticeable.

02

The light chooses the gestures

The hat, fingers and fabric receive the clearest notes. The face remains secondary, absorbed by the concentration of work.

03

Silhouette is never flat

Brown, green and bluish passages modulate the dark bodice. They detach the shoulder from the background without breaking the unity of the darkness.
