Reproduction details

Claude Monet · A foggy navy in 1871 · Wildenstein 169

View of a W169 porthand painted reproduction

A tugboat or steamer advances into a port under a plume of black smoke. Sailboats are moored on the right, while two small boats cross pale green water in the foreground. Monet paints maritime activity with remarkable economy: a few hulls, fine masts and large atmospheric touches are enough to make you feel the movement of a foggy day.

Look at the work

The smoke from the steam connects the port to the foggy sky

The line of docks and boats remains low. On the right, several masts rise above black and red hulls; on the left, a bridge and some buildings dissolve in the air. The smoke crosses the entire width of the center, first dense and black, then increasingly gray.

Water occupies most of the painting. A boat loaded with figures slides to the right, preceded by a small dark sailboat. Their reflections are indicated by some green and gray accents; large, calm areas retain milky light on the surface.

The harbor is bustling, but Monet leaves enough water and air between each boat for the mist to remain the true link to the scene.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Clustered activity near the horizon

Ships, docks and smoke form a middle band. The vast first body of water gives distance to small boats.

02

Smoke as a line of movement

It starts from the steam to the right and stretches to the left. Its irregular shape replaces a too rigid horizon line and animates the sky.

03

Boats reduced to a few signs

Hulls, figures and sails are not detailed. Dark and colorful accents are enough to convey their positions and directions.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference comes from the Christie's catalog photograph of the Wildenstein 169 version. The file of 3200 × 2435 px was reduced to 3000 × 2283 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

An open space around the boats

The red boat is not centered and the small sailboat remains isolated. These gaps make their movement visible on the water.

Color02

A cold range punctuated with red

Water greens, blue grays and whites dominate. The red shells and blacks of the smoke give the essential contrasts.

Matter03

A broad and assertive touch

Christie's emphasizes the freedom of gesture in this early work. The water and the sky are constructed by visible passages, without a smooth finish.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1871, this 49.8 × 65 cm oil on canvas bears number 169 of the Wildenstein catalog and remains in a private collection.

Moment01

Between London and the Netherlands

After the armistice of 1871, Monet left London and reached Holland. This navy belongs to a period of transition where the influence of Jongkind, Manet and British landscapes is transformed into personal language.

Atmosphere02

A foggy port day

The Christie's notice describes a scene painted on the spot with few resources: wide fingerboard, open contours and dissolved smoke reflect the activity without academic precision.

Provenance03

Durand-Ruel, Hecht and Pontremoli

Paul Durand-Ruel probably acquired the work from Monet in May 1872. It then passed into the Rodolphe Hecht and Pontremoli collections before several sales and private transmissions.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the large, calm body of water in the foreground.
  • Change the smoke from dense black to transparent grays.
  • Keep the small scales of the boat, sailboat and figures.
  • Maintain the reds of the shells without artificially detaching them from the mist.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its bluish grays, pale green water and red accents are suitable for a living room, office or bedroom. A smoky oak, soft black or patinated silver frame highlights the port atmosphere.
