A black sail concentrates the energy of the panorama

The lower bank occupies the lower left corner. Its clear greens and inclined reeds enter the water through a broken line. Behind it, small silhouettes of mills and masts stand out against the horizon, recalling the industrial landscape of Zaandam without closing the space.

The large central boat carries an almost black, slightly inflated sail. Around it, gray, white and orange sails create several depths. On the right, a small boat and its two figures advance near the viewer; their warm color contrasts with the beiges and grays of the water.

In this exceptionally large format, the boats become a series of vertical signs placed between sky and water.

A horizon placed very low

The sky occupies more than half the height and amplifies the impression of wind. The shore and boats remain grouped near the lower edge.

The main sail as a pivot

Its black-brown immediately focuses the eye. The smaller sails accompany it without competing with its mass.

Water made of bright accents

Yellows, beiges, grays and mauves are laid in small horizontal commas. They suggest surface wrinkles rather than continuous reflection.

With 73 cm wide and 34 cm high, the canvas gives navigation an almost cinematic continuity.

Blacks surrounded by light tones

The main sail stands out thanks to the pearly grays of the sky. The greens of the bank and the ochres of the water warm everything up.

The IIIF service reveals the curved and superimposed gestures that make up the clouds, as well as the firmer impasto on the sails.

Context01

From London to the Netherlands

Following the war of 1870-1871, Monet left France, passed through London then stayed in Zaandam with his family from May to October 1871.

Together02

About twenty-five Dutch views

The Nationalmuseum indicates that Monet created around twenty-five paintings during this stay, including several views of the mouth and the Zaan delta.

Collection03

Given at the museum in 1926

The work entered the Nationalmuseum by a donation from the Friends of the Museum, Nationalmusei Vänner, in 1926. It has since carried the inventory NM 2513.
