At low tide, the sea recedes and discovers in front of Varengeville a vast beach crossed by puddles and sandbanks. The cliffs stand on the right under a moving sky. Painted in February or March 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 70 cm is kept at the Kunst Museum Winterthur under the number G.2000.14 and corresponds to Wildenstein 723.
Look at the work
The foreground occupies most of the canvas. Horizontal and irregular bands indicate wet sand, puddles and channels left by the tide. The cliff closes the right of the composition and directs the gaze towards the marine opening on the left.
Deep blue, dark green, ocher, red and yellow mingle in the relief as in the shore. The colors of the cliff reappear in scattered touches on the sand, creating continuity between rock, humidity and light.
The retreat of the sea does not leave an empty space: Monet makes the shore a field of colors, where each puddle and each sandbank records the sky and the cliff differently.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The horizon remains high and the shore dominates the painted surface. This choice makes it possible to observe the transformations of the ground discovered by the tide rather than favoring a conventional maritime view.
The cliffs are shaped by fine, parallel lines, the sandbanks by shorter, irregular touches, while the puddles follow horizontal rhythms.
Deep areas mostly use blue and dark green. Red, yellow and purple appear in the rock and sand, preventing overcast weather from extinguishing the composition.

Only one exact image of W723 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 2,200 × 1,867 px, preserved in its useful definition without artificial enlargement.
Its profile and visual weight balance the opening of the shoreline. Reducing it would weaken the contrast between the stable rock and the changing strike.
The puddles do not form large, regular mirrors. Their fragmented succession allows you to feel the shallow depth and relief of the exposed sand.
These colors appear discreetly in the cliff then in the foreground. They unify the canvas and give warmth to winter light.
