Waterloo Bridge, London, sun effecthand painted reproduction

Waterloo Bridge appears in an almost dazzling yellow, pink and pale blue mist. The arches barely emerge, but the small colorful touches of the apron and two sailboats in the foreground are enough to give movement, distance and scale to the Thames.

Look at the work

Diffuse light absorbs the bridge without erasing its structure

The deck crosses the canvas halfway up like a discontinuous pink and yellow line. The piers descend towards large gray-blue arches, the edges of which blend into the water. Monet thus preserves the construction of the bridge while subjecting it to the atmosphere.

Orange-brown sailboats introduce the warmest accents. The closest is placed under the right arch of the center; its sail and its reflection form a fragile vertical in the middle of the horizontal gestures of the Thames.

The strength of this version is its low contrast: the bridge remains visible because each yellow, pink, sea green and mist blue occupies a slightly different temperature.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Waterloo Bridge, London, sun effect - Claude Monet
01

Arches built with minimal gaps

The openings are not drawn by a line. They appear when colder blues meet the pinks and yellows of the bridge.

02

Traffic reduced to colorful punctuations

On the apron, a few touches of yellow, green and orange evoke vehicles and figures. They give activity without becoming descriptive details.

03

Two sailboats bringing the river closer

The red-brown sails contrast with the pastel range. Their size and position create the foreground and prevent the mist from flattening the entire scene.

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

Arches in pastel lightThis detail shows the colorful line of the deck, the pink piers and the blue-green openings. Transitions must remain flexible without losing the rhythm of the bridge.

Sailboats and their reflections on the ThamesThe nearest sail is placed in orange-brown on very light blues, greens and pinks. Its reflection remains fragmented and must not become a symmetrical shape.

The exact view measures 2,400 × 1,543 px; details of arches and sailboats measure 1,800 × 650 px and 1,600 × 700 px. No files have been enlarged and all three images are real WebPs.
