Waterloo Bridge, Worcesterhand painted reproduction

Waterloo Bridge passes through a blue-gray mist where arches, traffic and industrial chimneys only appear by degrees. Red and orange accents animate the apron, while their echoes break in a cold and luminous Thames.

Look at the work

A monumental bridge made visible by tiny color differences

The apron forms a long, slightly rising horizontal, supported by piles which lose their base in the water. Monet closes almost no outline: the arches stand out because their blues are denser than those of the mist. The opposite bank and its chimneys remain even more diffuse.

On the bridge, a succession of small red, orange and brown touches suggests circulation. In the Thames, these warm notes never become continuous reflections; they alternate with silver, pale blue and mauve passages which keep the water mobile and deep.

In Worcester's version, architecture does not fight against fog: it is built inside it, from the lightest blue to the densest blue.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Waterloo Bridge, Worcester - Claude Monet
01

Arches opened by value, not by drawing

The silhouette of the bridge depends on very fine transitions between blue gray, turquoise and purple. A uniform outline would make the structure too hard and remove the atmospheric effect.

02

Circulation reduced to hot pulsations

The vehicles are evoked by discontinuous touches on the apron. Their orange-red must remain rare in order to illuminate the cold range without dominating it.

03

Water stratified in short strips

The vertical reflections of the piles are cut by clear, purple horizontal gestures. This crossing maintains the sensation of current and prevents mechanical symmetry.

London series02

Waterloo Bridge observed from the Savoy Hotel

Monet worked on the bridges of the Thames during his stays in London, then took up the paintings in his workshop in Giverny. Each version organizes the mist, light and activity of the river differently.

History of the museum03

A work entered into the collection in 1910

Number 1910.37 attests to its old acquisition by the Worcester Art Museum. A museum exhibition brought together nine versions of Waterloo Bridge to make their atmospheric variations visible.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version 1910.37, Wildenstein 1568
  • The arches melted into the mist without a hard outline
  • Warm accents widely spaced on the apron
  • Vertical reflections interrupted by the movement of water
