Look at the work

Under the overcast sky, the bridge becomes the horizontal rhythm of a moving city

The long apron line occupies the middle of the format. Its arches, more detailed than in several versions of the series, alternate blues, mauves and grays. Tiny vehicles, including omnibuses, punctuate the upper part without forming a rigid frieze.

The south bank is punctuated by chimneys whose smoke rises into the sky then dissolves there. In the foreground, the dark barges and their trails fragment the reflections. Monet thus balances two movements: the lateral circulation of the bridge and the unstable verticals of water and smoke.

The absence of direct sunlight does not make the scene dull: it allows Monet to multiply the colored grays, from pale turquoise to smoke purple.

A bridge readable by a succession of values

The piles and arches alternate more or less dense blues. A continuous contour would isolate them from the mist and make the transitions that build distance disappear.

The traffic mentioned on the right scale

Vehicles are very small touches on the apron. Their presence is precise, but they must never take over the general rhythm of the architecture.

Smoke mixed with the overcast sky

Industrial plumes combine gray, pink, purple and blue. They extend chimneys without fixed edges and give the atmosphere its material depth.
