Vase aux œillets, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Carnation vase, F245Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Red, pink and white carnations overflow from a small black vase placed at the edge of a table. Light green foliage rises behind the corollas and transforms the bouquet into an almost square mass.

Look at the work

The carnations stand out one by one in front of light and nervous foliage

The white flowers occupy the center and receive carmine pink lines. The reds close the sides, while the pale corollas at the bottom appear to fall towards the table.

The black vase is barely visible under the stems. Its blue and brown reflections distinguish it from the dark background; the table, constructed by horizontal touches, provides a more colorful base.

Carnation vase F245/JH1145 is an oil on canvas measuring 46 × 37.5 cm painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam preserves it under inventory A 2235.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh constructs this bouquet in layers: the carnations advance in the foreground, the light foliage creates an intermediate depth and the black-brown background closes the scene.

01

The white is crossed with carmine

Light carnations are not solid areas. Short pink and red lines follow the fringed petals and connect them to the darker flowers.

02

The foliage builds a bottom in the bottom

A light green mass rises behind the bouquet. It separates the corollas from the upper black and gives an intermediate depth.

03

The table receives the colors rejected by the flowers

Blue, ocher, red and green mingle in the lower part. These reminders prevent the bouquet from appearing placed on a simple flat brown surface.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F245/JH1145, the 46 × 37.5 cm format and the A 2235 inventory precisely identify the work of the Stedelijk Museum.

Museum

The painting belongs to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

Inventory A 2235 allows it to be distinguished from the numerous carnation vases kept in other collections.

Signature

Van Gogh signs "Vincent" in red

The signature is placed in the lower left corner, directly in the colored strip of the table.

Research

The bouquet belongs to the Parisian exercises of color

By painting different flowers, Van Gogh varies the reds, whites and greens while testing a touch adapted to each material.
