Vincent van Gogh · July 1886 · Paris

Vase with red and white flowers, F237Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Tall red gladioli rise above lower white flowers, gathered in a round yellow-green vase. The verticality of the bouquet contrasts sharply with an almost black brown background.

Look at the work

A red column springs from a white bouquet and a golden vase

The very narrow format leads the eye from the vase towards the central stem. The red flowers form an irregular vertical, while the white ones open laterally around the collar.

The paint remains thick and visible: frank reds, cream whites, black greens and yellow of the vase are applied in short touches. The brown background reveals a network of brush strokes.

Vase with red and white flowers F237/JH1131 is a 65.5 × 35 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in July 1886. The museum preserves it under inventory 2607 (MK).

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This still life belongs to the floral exercises thanks to which Van Gogh broadens his Parisian palette. The bouquet contrasts colors, heights and directions rather than a perfectly regular decorative arrangement.

01

Red organizes the entire vertical axis

Gladioli stack from center to top. Their thick petals form a succession of red masses separated by green stems.

02

The white flowers widen the base

Smaller and more numerous, they create two luminous wings around the vase and prevent the composition from becoming a simple straight line.

03

The vase acts as a golden spring

Yellow, green and brown zigzags describe its spherical volume. This reflective material concentrates light in the lower part.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The museum notice gives 1886, 65.5 × 35 cm and the number 2607 (MK). Catalogs identify the canvas as F237/JH1131.

Paris

Painting flowers to learn color

Van Gogh multiplied the bouquets in 1886 to explore the reds, greens, pinks and blues which gradually replaced the dark range of his Dutch years.

Collection

Acquired with DG van Beuningen

The painting joined the museum in 1958 with the collection of industrialist Daniël George van Beuningen and received the number 2607 (MK).

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the axis of the red gladioli, the dispersion of the white flowers, the yellow-green volume of the vase, the dark stems and the brown material of the bottom.

  • The high succession of red gladioli
  • The little white flowers around the vase
  • The green stems that cross the bouquet
  • The zigzag reflections of the round vase
  • The brown background worked in thick touches
