À propos de l’œuvre

Vase aux glaïeuls et asters de Chine, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · August -September 1886 · Paris

Vase with gladioli and Chinese asters, F248aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

White, pink and red gladioli soar out of a cylindrical vase placed in front of a blue background. Around the container, cut flowers, leaves and petals extend the bouquet on the table; the thick paint transforms each corolla into visible relief.

Look at the work

The bouquet goes beyond the framework of an ordered still life

The stems fan up and almost touch the upper edge. The white gladioli occupy the left, the red ones form an axis to the right, while the yellow and white asters fill the lower intervals.

The dark vase gives an anchor point in the lower center. The fallen flowers overflow on either side, breaking the symmetry and connecting the vertical bouquet with the horizontal surface of the table.

Vase with gladioli and Chinese asters F248a/JH1148 is an oil on canvas of 46.5 × 38.4 cm painted in Paris in August - September 1886. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0144V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh uses a very generous material to contrast the warm flowers with the blue background. The brushstrokes remain readable in the petals, the vase, the table and even the background.

01

The gladioli give an ascending architecture

Their long green stems pass through the composition and bear stepped flowers. The alternation of open corollas and buds prevents the bouquet from becoming a compact mass.

02

Blue makes reds and oranges vibrate

The cold background reinforces the red gladioli with complementary contrast. Blue touches also reappear in the shadows of the vase and between the white petals.

03

Impasto makes each flower almost tactile

Cream, pink, yellow and red are applied in thick layers. The direction of the key simultaneously describes the petal and the energy of the gesture.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F248a/JH1148, the 46.5 × 38.4 cm format and the s0144V1962 inventory precisely identify the version of the Van Gogh Museum.

Influence

Monticelli's discovery encourages even thicker material

Van Gogh admires the unpolished appearance and impasto of Adolphe Monticelli's bouquets. In the summer of 1886, he deliberately explored these relief effects in his own flowers.

Paris

The flowers serve as a testing ground for a new palette

After the browns of Nuenen, Van Gogh works on clearer and more frank oppositions. Red versus blue becomes as important here as the botanical subject.

Collection

The original belongs to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation

The painting is kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam under number s0144V1962, with its dimensions and dating documented.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the momentum of the large stems, the white and red gladioli, the small asters, the dark vase, the fallen flowers, the nuanced blue of the bottom and the characteristic thickness of the petals.

  • The large white gladioli bordered with pink on the left
  • The tall stem of red flowers on the right
  • The yellow and white asters placed lower down
  • The cylindrical vase modeled by vertical touches
  • Cut flowers and leaves scattered on the table
