Tisserand arrangeant les fils, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April - May 1884 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Weaver arranging the threads, F35Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

In an almost black workshop, a weaver stands in the middle of his loom and adjusts the threads. The window, the light fabric and a few reflections on the wood are enough to bring man and machine out of the darkness.

Look at the work

The loom like a large wooden architecture

The loom frame occupies almost the entire width. Its uprights, crosspieces and threads form a tight network in front of the weaver, whose silhouette can be read between the luminous window and the fabric.

The table or bench in the foreground advances diagonally, while the dark wall closes the space. The yellow light coming from the window hangs a few surfaces and gives the small workshop a theatrical depth.

Weaver arranging the wires F35/JH478 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 41.1 × 57.5 cm, painted in Nuenen in April-May 1884. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 111.301.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh does not simplify the loom as a symbol. He describes its bulky construction, then uses the contrasts of light to make this assembly of wood readable in a cramped room.

01

The machine dominates the figure

The weaver seems almost caught up in the trade. This disproportion reflects the physical place of the machine in the workshop and the demanding nature of the work.

02

The window concentrates the light

Its pale yellow tiles form the lightest rectangle on the canvas. They cut out the profile of the weaver and are repeated in the light strips of the fabric.

03

Browns stand out in the dark

Black green, red brown and ocher wood overlap without uniform outline. Small light touches are enough to separate the sleepers, wires and furniture.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Data from the Kroeller-Müller Museum and Van Gogh Worldwide make it possible to identify the work and place it in the campaign dedicated to the weavers of Nuenen.

Series

Weavers observed at work

From the end of 1883, Van Gogh regularly visited the linen weavers of Nuenen. He draws and paints them in the small rooms where their looms are installed.

Challenge

Understand a complex machine

The proportions of the loom, its numerous bars and the reduced space make the pattern difficult. This complexity attracts Van Gogh as much as the life of the craftsman.

Light

A chiaroscuro effect

The museum brings the lighting in these workshops closer to the effects that Van Gogh describes as rembrandtesque. Here, rare light shapes the light fabric and the heavy wooden frame.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must restore the exact network of the loom, the small silhouette of the weaver, the yellow window, the areas of light fabric and above all the numerous passages of brown and green in the darkness.

  • The thick uprights and crosspieces of the loom
  • The silhouette of the weaver between the threads
  • The yellow window tiles
  • The clear fabric spread in the machine
  • Brown furniture moving forward in the foreground
