Vincent van Gogh · July 1884 · Nuenen, Netherlands
In the darkened workshop, a weaver works in front of a wide open window. Beyond the leaves, a light field, a leaning figure and Nuenen's tower create a second painting inside the first.
Look at the work
The loom fills the left part and the foreground. The weaver, dressed in blue-green, is seen in profile under a heavy black crossbar; his hands appear among the threads and pieces of wood.
The window occupies the center right and brings most of the light. In the frame there is a yellow-green meadow, a curved peasant and the red silhouette of the old tower, while the room remains almost black.
Weaver near an open window F24/JH500 is an oil on canvas of 67.7 × 93.2 cm painted in Nuenen in July 1884. It is kept at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich under number 14249.
Composition, touch and color
The singularity of this large canvas comes from the contrast between two spaces. The loom occupies an interior of brown and black green, while the window offers a light landscape where we recognize a worker and the village tower.
Its luminous rectangle has its own depth, horizon and figures. It gives air to a composition that is nevertheless dominated by the mass of the profession.
His face, jacket and hands are lit by only a few touches. This restraint restores the real conditions of a cluttered domestic workshop.
The ropes and crosspieces pass in front of the window and prevent a clear separation. The gaze thus circulates from the machine towards the field, then returns to the gesture of the craftsman.
Documented benchmarks
The F24/JH500 catalog notice, the large format and number 14249 make it possible to identify this version kept in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen.
The small red silhouette in the window is the tower of the ancient church of Nuenen, a motif that Van Gogh also paints as the main subject of several landscapes.
In July 1884, Van Gogh took up the theme after his first winter and spring studies. The more ambitious format allows for a complete staging of the workshop.
The painting belongs to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and is associated with the Neue Pinakothek, where the actual photograph of the framed work was taken.
