À propos de l’œuvre
Entrée d'une carrière, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Mid-July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Quarry entry, F744Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
An ocher opening sinks beneath swirling trees and bushes; Van Gogh paints the entrance to the quarry as an almost secret passage, entirely absorbed by the vegetation of Saint-Rémy.
Look at the work
A mineral gap in the foliage
The quarry forms a beige triangle in the upper center, extended by a red-brown path that descends towards the viewer. On the left, a light wall marks the cut edge of the rock.
Around this opening, trees and shrubs fill almost the entire canvas. The foliage is constructed by green, blue and black curls; tall light grass closes the foreground.
Van Gogh painted F744 in mid-July 1889 in the immediate vicinity of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. In an August letter, he described a deliberately sober and matte palette, made of broken greens, reds and rust-colored yellows.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Inventory s0041V1962, 60 × 73.5 cm format and references F744/JH1802 identify the work of the Van Gogh Museum, different from the second Entrance to an F635 quarry.
A funnel composition
The masses of foliage converge towards the clear quarry. The central path draws the eye into the depth despite the almost wall density of the vegetation.
Deliberately broken greens
Olive green, turquoise, blue black and earth yellow juxtapose. The range remains matte and mineral rather than shiny.
The movement of the key
Brushstrokes follow each shape: loops in the trees, diagonals on the rock and lines drawn in the grass in the foreground.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Number F744 is essential: Van Gogh painted two quarries near Saint-Rémy whose French titles are often confused.
F744 in Amsterdam
This dense, very leafy canvas belongs to the Van Gogh Museum; the other Entrance to a quarry, F635/JH1767, is a different composition.
Sober and matte tones
Van Gogh himself cites the broken greens, reds, ocher yellows and rust colors used for this landscape.
Around Saint-Paul-de-Mausole
The quarry was in the rocky landscape that the artist could explore near the Saint-Rémy asylum.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must maintain the depth of the central gap, the variety of broken greens and the distinct movement of trees, rock and grass.
- The Career Beige Opening
- The red-brown path in the center
- The light rock wall on the left
- The large swirls of foliage
- The yellow and green herbs in the foreground
