At the water's edge, Blanche Hoschedé paints in front of her easel while her sister Suzanne sits nearby. Their light dresses, hats and some red accents stand out in an environment of foliage and reflections. Dated 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 39 × 50 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1149.
Look at the work
Blanche stands in front of the easel in the right part of the stage. Suzanne appears seated further to the left, facing the same bright space. The small scale of the painting and the proximity of the figures give the whole the immediate character of a family moment observed on site.
The greens of the foliage surround the light dresses and hats. In the foreground, the water takes up fragments of sky, vegetation and light with horizontal touches. Red accents warm up the range and successively attract the eye towards the two sisters.
The painting represents both a family motif and an artistic practice: Monet paints Blanche at the very moment when she learns to look at and paint the landscape.

Blanche learned painting from Monet and frequently worked outdoors. Suzanne also appears in several of the artist's compositions.
She later married Jean Monet and pursued a work as a landscaper marked by impressionism. This scene thus constitutes a rare testimony to his learning.
The painting appeared in the exhibition The Impressionists in Private, organized from February 13 to July 6, 2014, while remaining in a private collection.
