Vue sur Auvers avec champ de blé, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

View of Auvers-sur-OiseReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Above a field of cereals, the houses and bell tower of Auvers gather under a pale green sky crossed by powerful clouds. Van Gogh reveals the dark canvas in places and gives the landscape an almost tactile vigor.

Look at the work

The village between dry wheat and moving clouds

The field is painted with irregular lines which evoke dry stems without describing them one by one. Higher up, the stone houses take on a bluish light. Their sustained contours give weight to the village despite the small format of the work.

Dark green loops surround the buildings and rise towards the sky. The clouds, modeled in thick masses, seem to roll above the curved horizon. In some areas, the dark background remains deliberately visible between brushstrokes.

On a small scale, Van Gogh contrasts the harsh drought of wheat, the blue solidity of houses and the momentum of clouds.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The RISD Museum's painting can be recognized by its 34 × 42.1 cm format, its pale green sky and the areas of dark canvas visible between the keys.

01

A deliberately open material

Brushstrokes do not evenly cover the support. Dark gaps accentuate the vibration of the field and the speed of execution.

02

Houses anchored by blue

The walls and roofs are surrounded and bathed in blue. This color cools the background while giving the volumes a firm presence.

03

A muscular sky

The clouds wrap around in large white and bluish shapes. Their growth responds to loops of foliage and animates the entire upper half.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must respect the gaps between the keys, the compact design of the houses and the opposition between the dry field, the dark foliage and the clear sky.

  • Irregular wheat lines and visible canvas areas
  • The blue contours of the houses and the bell tower
  • The dark green curls that frame the village
  • Thick clouds unfolded against the pale green sky
