Claude Monet · The quay, the Pont-Neuf and the left bank from the Louvre · The Hague

Quai du Louvre W83hand painted reproduction

From a balcony of the Louvre, Monet embraces the lively quay, the Seine, the Pont-Neuf and the facades of the left bank. Fiacres, horses and walkers cross in the foreground under a row of yellow trees; behind them, the Parisian roofs extend to the dome of the Pantheon. The city is painted like a panoramic landscape, without a central event, under an immense and luminous sky.

Look at the work

The movement of the quay forms a frieze under the clear panorama of the left bank

The foreground is occupied by the roadway and its numerous figures. Black cars, brown horses, groups of passers-by and kiosks are distributed without ceremonial order. The row of golden trees separates this agitation from the Seine.

Beyond the river, the buildings form a long irregular line. A large red sign catches the eye on the left; the Pantheon rises near the center, surrounded by bell towers and chimneys. The pale blue sky, strewn with white clouds, occupies more than half of the canvas.

Paris is not reduced to a monument: traffic, trees, facades and the sky share the same importance in the daily spectacle.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A city treated on a landscape scale

The museum emphasizes that Monet constructs a horizon and a large atmospheric expanse here without focusing on an anecdote. The width of the canvas allows circulation to become a continuous rhythm.

02

The high point of view as a modern tool

The height clearly separates the vehicles, the bank, the river and the buildings. It also gives the figures the appearance of small moving touches, foreshadowing the views of boulevards from the 1870s.

03

Warm accents in a clear range

The yellow of the trees, the red of the sign and the browns of the cars liven up the bluish grays of Paris. These spaced colors prevent the panorama from becoming uniform.

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to inventory 0332453 of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Wildenstein number 83. It was reduced to 3,000 × 2,113 px then encoded in high quality WebP.

Composition01

The sky maintains a wider touch scale

The clouds are painted in flexible and spaced passages, while the figures receive small, tight marks. This difference reinforces the atmospheric immensity.

Color02

The circulation remains readable without miniature detail

A few silhouettes, wheels and horse profiles are enough. Their diversity must be preserved without tracing each contour, in order to maintain the impression of movement.

Matter03

The trees form a discontinuous screen

Their yellow and green foliage reveals the water and the facades. Making them opaque would cut off the depth between the nearby quay and the distant city.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1867, this oil on canvas measures 65.1 × 92.6 cm. It is kept at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag under number 0332453 and bears the reference Wildenstein 83.

Series01

One of three Parisian views from the Louvre

In the spring of 1867, Monet set up his easel on a balcony in the Colonnade. Quai du Louvre accompanies Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois W84 and Le Jardin de l'Infante W85.

Modernity02

The museum facing the street

Instead of copying the old masters kept behind him, Monet observes the contemporary capital. The platform, the cars and the crowds give the panorama its true modern subject.

Collection03

Legacy Philips-van der Willigen in 1942

The work enters the collections of The Hague through the bequest of Mr. and Mrs. GLF Philips-van der Willigen. Today it belongs to the strong points of the Kunstmuseum's journey.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the deep breath of the sky.
  • Keep traffic as a lively frieze.
  • Preserve the golden trees between the quay and the Seine.
  • Maintain monuments within atmospheric distance.
