Willows W611hand painted reproduction

From a grassy bank, Monet looks out over the Seine through a curtain of willows. The thin trunks and flexible branches occupy almost the entire height, but reveal the lilac gray water and the houses on the opposite bank. Dated 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 66.68 × 81.92 cm is kept in the National Gallery of Art under number 2015.19.65 and corresponds to Wildenstein 611.

Look at the work

The trees become a moving veil between the viewer and the Seine

The main willow divides slightly to the right of center. Its branches rise, bend and get lost in a canopy made of small green, yellow and blue commas. On the left, other finer branches repeat this rhythm and prevent the sky from forming an empty area.

The other bank appears very low, through the trunks: ocher, pink and blue-gray houses form a discontinuous band behind the river. Monet reduces the architecture to a few colored masses so that the real subject remains the light filtered by the foliage.

The painting does not frame an isolated willow like a portrait of a tree: it takes the eye through a thickness of branches, leaves, air and reflections before reaching the houses of Vétheuil.

The trunks do not form a regular grid. They tilt, divide and cross, giving a lively rhythm that contrasts with the calm line of the river.

An almost entirely cold palette

Celadon greens, gray blues and light mauves overlap in the foliage. A few yellows in the grass and a few ochres on the houses warm up this range without breaking its unity.

Canvas reserves and light touches

Some areas remain very little covered and allow the surface to breathe. This airy execution reflects the transparency of young leaves and the passage of light rather than a compact plant mass.

The houses form only a narrow strip beyond the water. Enlarging them would move the main pattern of the trees towards the village.

Keep the greens pale and nuanced

The foliage mixes yellow, blue, gray and soft green. Uniform saturation would remove the light passages that give W611 its full vibration.

The banks of the Seine at Vétheuil

Old exhibition titles, including Saules au bord de la rivière and Saules de Vétheuil, confirm the identification of the painted site during Monet's stay in the village.

Registration02

"Claude Monet 188[?]" bottom right

The last number has become difficult to read, but the National Gallery of Art catalog dates the work to 1880 and links it to Wildenstein 611.

Provenance03

From Durand-Ruel to the Corcoran Collection

Sold by the artist in November 1880, the painting went to Potter and Bertha Palmer, then joined the Corcoran Gallery before its transfer to the National Gallery of Art in 2015.
