Look at the work

A road, pruned trees and the return of spring

Tadpole willows are cut regularly so that their branches grow back from a thick head. Van Gogh follows the row along a path that curves towards the bottom; yellow and brown trunks stand out against bright green grass and a lilac gray sky.

Painted during the artist's last weeks in Arles, the canvas combines direct observation and decorative simplification. The trees form a series of irregular silhouettes, while the road, wide open in the foreground, absorbs touches of pink, mauve, cream and blue-gray.

The most ordinary rural motif becomes a rhythm: each trunk repeats the previous one, but none has exactly the same shape.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The main thing is to maintain the curve of the path and the personality of each willow, without standardizing their size or their antlers.

01

Tree procession

Willows gradually decrease with distance. Their gnarled heads and short branches create an irregular cadence on the left side of the road.

02

The curve of the path

The road occupies a large area and turns behind the row. Its oblique pink, gray and yellow touches accompany the movement of the gaze.

03

Green versus purple

The yellow-green grasses oppose the purple-gray sky and the cold shadows of the path. This complementarity gives freshness to the scene.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F520/JH1690 precisely designates this willow road painted in Arles in April 1889.

Catalog

F520· JH1690

These references avoid confusion with the numerous willows painted by Van Gogh in the Netherlands and with his studies of 1888.

Format

55 × 65 cm

The tight horizontal format gives an unusual place to the path and brings the trunks closer to the viewer.

Conservation

Private collection

The painting is traditionally associated with the Stavros Niarchos collection; it is not attributed to a public museum.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The road should not become a smooth surface: its changes in color and direction give as much life to the canvas as the trees.

  • The different silhouette of each tadpole willow
  • The gradual reduction of trees towards the bottom
  • The ample curve and nuanced colors of the path
  • The contrast between the bright grass and the purple sky
  • The brown wall on the right which closes the composition
