A light pink path crosses a flat polder, crosses a small bridge and disappears to the left. On the other side of the canal, a series of mills line up under an overcast sky which occupies almost two thirds of the canvas. Monet combines the topographical precision of a Dutch industrial landscape with a deliberately muffled range, attentive to the light of a gray day.

The clear path connects the viewer to the mills

The path enters from below, curves then climbs onto a wooden footbridge. A small dark figure appears near the bridge. On the left, a narrow ditch accompanies the path; on the right, the main canal extends towards several low buildings.

The mills are distributed on a very low horizon line. The largest, to the right of the center, has brown-red wings and dominates dark green houses. Smaller mills chant both sides, while a black boat slides through the water.

The space seems immense because the mills remain low, the path quickly narrows and the cloudy sky retains almost the entire width of the painting.

A horizon placed at the lower third

The low height of the land gives the sky its importance. The silhouettes of the mills become spaced signs whose wings interrupt the long horizontal line.

A pink curve in a gray green landscape

The path brings the main warm color and leads directly to the small bridge. Its pale color responds to the clearings of the sky without breaking the chosen range.

Clouds built by thick beaches

Gray, cream and very pale yellow overlap in broad touches. The sky remains bright despite its cover and creates the atmosphere of a humid day.

The Walters' notice brings grays, muffled greens and browns closer to the palette of contemporary Dutch painters that Monet could observe on site.

Bodies separated by water and paths

Ditch, path, embankment and canal fit together without hard outline. Their slightly different values are enough to make the geography of the polder readable.

Stay01

Five months in the Netherlands in 1871

Monet stayed in the Zaandam region from May to October. The Walters indicates that there he creates around twenty small views of the city, its canals and its mills.

A young girl on the way

The small silhouette located near the bridge enlivens the road between Oostzaan and Zaandam. Its size measures the width of the landscape and prevents the mills from appearing miniature.

Provenance03

From Durand-Ruel to Henry Walters

After several owners, the painting passed through Durand-Ruel then entered the collection of Henry Walters after 1909. His legacy from 1931 founded the museum which preserves it today.
