Painted from a boat in the polders west of Zaandam, this view combines the industrial work of the landscape and the rapid changes of wind, water and light.

Look at the work

The wings of the mills punctuate a polder channel

The largest mill is on the right, its dark tower placed behind a platform and a low building. Two other mills dominate the central part, while smaller silhouettes close the horizon. The wings change angle and color, avoiding any mechanical repetition.

The canal starts from the lower edge and leads towards a narrow footbridge. A character appears there as a small dark vertical. The grassy banks remain low, but the sheds, fences and piles create a succession of planes before the mills.

The landscape appears horizontal, yet the red wings, masts and stakes cross it diagonally which immediately make the wind visible.

A viewpoint placed in the axis of the channel

The instructions probably place Monet on the Zaanse Bovenvaart. The water creates a direct route to the footbridge, then the mills are distributed on either side.

Colorful wings as main accents

Brick reds, browns and grays stand out from the sky. Each pair of wings has a distinct angle, which animates the horizon line despite the immobility of the towers.

An atmosphere unified by the gray blues

Sky and water share cool tones, but the sky uses large cloudy passages and the channel uses tight horizontal touches. The green lands clearly separate them.

The right mill dominates, those in the center occupy the intermediate plane and the smaller ones retreat. This gradual decrease builds the depth of the polder.

Deaf reds in a cold range

The wings and some roofs provide warm accents. Their saturation remains contained so as not to break the gray sky or damp greens.

Visible matter in clouds and water

The clouds are placed by wide smears, the channel by shorter touches. This difference retains the opening of the sky and the movement close to the surface.

The instructions describe a polder dotted with sawmills and sheds. Monet would have observed the pattern from a boat, in the axis of a wide canal still identifiable today.

A Dutch summer full of twenty-five paintings

Monet arrived in Zaandam in June 1871. Colorful houses, boats and hundreds of mills provided him with subjects for about four months.

Acquisition03

Entered the Van Gogh Museum in 2001

The museum acquired the painting from a private collection with the help of the Vereniging Rembrandt and several Dutch funds. It has since carried inventory s0503S2001.
