Winter in Giverny - Le Frost W963hand painted reproduction

Two dark walkers advance to the left of a frozen path, facing a clump of trees covered in frost. The sky, ground and branches share whites colored blue, pink, mauve and pale yellow. Painted and signed in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 54 × 71 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-18 and corresponds to Wildenstein 963.

Look at the work

Two silhouettes measure a landscape where frost blurs all limits

The large straight massif overflows towards the center through a low, almost horizontal branch. Its leaves and branches are not drawn separately: Monet makes them emerge through loops, impasto and nervous lines whose density increases towards the edge.

On the left, space brightens around the two figures. Their vertical bodies, reduced to a few blues and blacks, stand out on the pink path and guide the gaze towards the background, where the frost merges with the sky.

Winter whiteness remains full of color: it is the circulation of blues, pinks and grays that unites the air, the soil and the vegetation.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A balance between mass and vacuum

The trees occupy almost two-thirds right while the left remains open. Walkers prevent this clear area from appearing empty and give the composition its point of tension.

02

Snow without neutral white

The path mixes blue, mauve, pink and cream. These touches show reflections of the sky and variations of material rather than a uniform surface.

03

Branches written directly by the brush

Blue curves, black accents and white impasto intersect without visible preparatory outline. This gestural energy makes frost a subject of painting as much as a meteorological effect.

Read this specific version

The only open image from Museum Barberini is kept at 3,000 × 2,260 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep walkers very small

They must remain simple dark landmarks. Faces or clothing that are too detailed would distract attention from the light phenomenon.

Color02

Preserve the transparency of the left part

The sky and the path respond to each other in similar tones. Too strong a contrast would close the depth and make the cold mist disappear.

Matter03

Keep the thick material of the solid straight

Layering the keys is essential to make the branches loaded with frost. Smooth processing would weaken the entire W963 version.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Barberini documents Le Givre à Giverny, oil on canvas signed from 1885, 54 × 71 cm, MB-Mon-18 inventory and Wildenstein 963 catalog.

Title01

A view formerly published as Givre au Bois de Boulogne

The location has been revised: the work is today attached to the surroundings of Giverny, where Monet has lived since 1883.

Figures02

Both walkers organize space

The museum's documentation highlights their role as a spatial landmark in a composition whose light, fluid areas otherwise tend to blend together.

Matter03

Each party receives a different gesture

Elongated keys on the path, curly marks in the branches and light smears in the sky make it possible to distinguish surfaces without rigid contours.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 963 version
  • The two walkers in the left area
  • The lower branch that crosses the center
  • The blue, pink and purple whites of the frost

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This very light horizontal landscape is suitable for a quiet bedroom, living room or office. A pearl gray, glacier blue or powder pink wall and an aged silver frame extend its winter light.
