Three tiny figures cross a vast green clearing lined with red trees. The edge forms two masses which move away towards a luminous passage, under a blue-gray sky painted with large touches. Around 1863, Monet radically simplified this interior landscape and contrasted the warm browns of the forest with the cold blues of the atmosphere.

The green clearing amplifies the smallness of the figures in front of the forest

The foreground is almost empty: a green expanse rises gently towards the edge and bears only a few dark traces. Two wood pickers follow one another on the left, their bundles and their dresses indicated by deep browns; a third, more distant silhouette stands near the trees.

The forest is dense on the right, more vertical and bare on the left. Between the two, an opening descends towards the center like a valley. The sky, built by large touches of blue, white and gray, responds to the orange-browns of the foliage.

The human scale is deliberately reduced: the work scene is mainly used to measure the extent of the clearing and the weight of the forest.

The MFA highlights the unusual flattening of this interior view. The ground, edge and sky are distributed in large colored areas rather than successive details.

The sky, grass and foliage retain clear traces. This touch does not yet seek impressionist shimmer: it affirms the material and direction of the planes.

A range reminiscent of Courbet

Browns and warm greens are juxtaposed with the blue of the sky. The museum's notice brings this franchise closer to the powerfully painted landscapes of realistic predecessors like Gustave Courbet.

The visual corresponds to the Lumberjacks at the edge of the forest, circa 1863, inventory 1974.325 from the Museum of Fine Arts and catalog Wildenstein 18. The only image is a real WebP of 1,600 × 1,053 px, preserved at its source definition without artificial enlargement.

The large meadow should not become a flat surface

Dark greens, bluish greens and some ochres follow slight undulations. Diagonal traces connect the characters to the edge.

The figures are small but clearly differentiated

The picker in the foreground bears the darkest value; the other two are gradually reduced. Their exact scale is essential to the monumentality of the site.

Matter03

Red trees alternate masses and isolated trunks

The right forms a compact volume, while the left shows more vertical branches. Reproducing this asymmetry maintains the central opening.

Painted around 1863 in oil on panel, the work measures 59.7 × 90.2 cm. It is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under the 1974.325 inventory and bears the number Wildenstein 18.

An interior landscape from the early years

The painting belongs to Monet's early research, when he frequented the surroundings of Chailly and the forest of Fontainebleau with Frédéric Bazille.

An oil on panel rather than canvas

The rigid support accompanies direct and compact work. The MFA sheet identifies it precisely as an oil painting on panel.

Acquisition03

The Henry H. and Zoe Oliver Sherman Fund

After a stint at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, the work entered the MFA in 1974. It bears the 1974.325 inventory and is not currently on display.
