À propos de l’œuvre

Ancienne gare d'Eindhoven, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · January 1885 · Eindhoven, painted from Nuenen

Eindhoven Old Station, F67aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Behind a long brick wall covered in snow, the low buildings of the old Eindhoven station stretch under a gray green sky. Three dark silhouettes advance in the cold, separated by the bare trunks that punctuate this tiny railway landscape.

Look at the work

A station almost hidden behind snow, trees and a continuous wall

The composition is divided into horizontal bands: snowy path, brown wall, white roofs and sky. Very thin trees cross these layers and give a vertical measurement to the small panoramic format.

On the right, two figures walk side by side; a third stands closer to the center. Their black clothes become depth markers among the broken whites, greens and dark reds.

The Old Eindhoven Station F67a/JH602 is a 13.5 × 24 cm oil on canvas painted in January 1885, during the Nuenen period. The work today belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The low height of the canvas reinforces the horizontality of the quay and buildings. Van Gogh introduces rhythm through the spaced trunks, chimneys and three figures, without breaking the impression of winter silence.

01

Wall almost entirely masks rail activity

No trains are visible. The red-brown stripe closes the scene, but the differences in roof and chimneys still make it possible to identify a group of station buildings.

02

Bare trees function as a graphic scope

Their dark trunks are distributed at unequal intervals across the entire width. Branches and posts form fine signs in front of the thick sky.

03

Snow is never painted pure white

Cream, pale green, earth pink and blue gray describe the traces of the path and the layers deposited on the roofs. This range connects the ground to the sky.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F67a/JH602, the 13.5 × 24 cm format and the dating from January 1885 identify this winter view of Eindhoven.

Format

The painting is only 13.5 cm high

Its very elongated ratio is suitable for deploying the station behind the wall. The silhouettes and trunks therefore remain deliberately tiny.

Period

Van Gogh then worked in Nuenen, near Eindhoven

The painter explores the villages, roads and industrial sites of Brabant. The railway here becomes an element of the everyday landscape rather than a spectacular symbol of modernity.

Winter

The work is contemporary with several snowy landscapes

In January 1885, Van Gogh studied snow in a dark palette, notably around the presbytery of Nuenen. F67a shares this green and gray light.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the panoramic format, the snow-covered roofs, the continuous brown wall, the three figures, the very fine black trunks and the green shades of the winter sky.

  • The white roofs that appear behind the wall
  • Fireplaces and posts drawn in the green sky
  • The isolated silhouette near the center left
  • The two characters united in the right part
  • The brown and gray marks that cross the snow
