The Mill on the Onbekende Gracht in Amsterdam W302hand painted reproduction

The large De Eendracht mill stands among the gabled houses and dominates the Onbekende Gracht. Its wings cross a blue sky covered with light clouds; in the canal, the white facades, orange roofs and dark body of the mill fragment into colorful reflections. Monet thus unites a monument of old Amsterdam with a resolutely impressionistic surface of water.

Look at the work

The mill divides the canvas between the sky and the moving reflections of the canal

The brown body of the mill widens towards a circular gallery then narrows to the roof. Its wings cut the sky obliquely. To the left and right, the houses alternate between light facades, dark gables and red roofs; four small figures can be seen on the quay without interrupting the scale of the monument.

The lower half is devoted to water. The reflections are placed in short horizontal dashes of blue, white, orange, yellow and gray. Those of the mill do not form a continuous dark copy: they mingle with the colors of the houses and the sky, giving the canal a vibration which contrasts with the stability of the buildings.

The mill belongs to Amsterdam's past, but its discontinuous reflections bring it into a painting entirely attentive to the present light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A calculated position without symmetry

The mill is moved slightly to the left and its wings extend widely around it. This position lets the houses on the right breathe and balances the large white facade on the left.

02

Two writings of water and sky

The sky receives wider, curved and airy touches; the canal is constructed by tight, horizontal segments. The common palette nevertheless connects the two areas around the line of the quays.

03

A precisely identifiable urban memory

The Amsterdam archives allow us to recognize the De Eendracht mill, a dyeing wood mill built in 1656 on the Onbekende Gracht. Monet preserves its silhouette amid the transformations of the city.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the Mill on the Onbekende Gracht in Amsterdam, inventory 98.293 of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Wildenstein number 302. The image of 2200 × 1869 px is preserved at its native definition in a real WebP.

Composition01

The wings cross the sky with uneven angles

Their finesse and their overlaps must remain legible without becoming perfectly mechanical lines. They give the sky its main oblique rhythm.

Color02

The mill contains several browns and blues

Its very dark tower nevertheless reflects the sky and the houses. Blue, gray, ocher and red passages avoid the effect of a cut black mass.

Matter03

Orange reflections are distributed throughout the water

They correspond to roofs and facades but disperse horizontally. Their warm presence must remain fragmented so as not to form a continuous band.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Dated 1874, this oil on canvas measures 54 × 64.1 cm. It is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston under inventory 98.293 and listed as Wildenstein 302.

Monument01

The Eendracht mill on the Onbekende Gracht

Built in 1656, this mill transformed wood used to produce dyes. It was demolished in 1876 to make way for the Royal Carré theater, which set a certain limit to the creation of the view.

Dating02

A view attached to the Amsterdam group

The Wildenstein catalog places a group of twelve views of Amsterdam in 1874, including this painting. The museum specifies that the date is based on stylistic study, the documented stays not making it possible to fix with certainty the exact moment of its execution.

Collection03

Audrey Jones Beck's gift

John A. and Audrey Jones Beck acquired the work in 1972. It then entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through a donation from Audrey Jones Beck and today bears inventory 98,293.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the slightly off-center position of the mill.
  • Maintain thin wings and their irregular obliques.
  • Distinguish the airy touches of the sky from the dashes of the channel.
  • Fragment hot reflections without aligning them mechanically.
