À propos de l’œuvre
Jeune Fille en blanc, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Young Girl in WhiteReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A young woman in a white dress stands alone in the middle of a green field. Her large yellow hat, the pink touches of the fabric and a few orange flowers animate this slender figure.
Look at the work
A white silhouette absorbed by the green field
Seen up to her knees, the young woman turns her body slightly and looks to the left. Her wide-brimmed yellow hat frames a thin face; a small sky blue decoration marks the skullcap.
The white color is shaped by pink, pale blue and green impasto. Behind it, the herbs are rendered by celery green and bay leaf dashes; orange, pink and blue dots suggest the scattered flowers.
The model does not simply stand out from the landscape: the touches of her dress take on the colors of the field, while the yellow hat becomes the luminous point which maintains her presence.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The National Gallery of Art preserves this portrait under number 1963.10.30. It is cataloged F788/JH2055 and was painted in an unusually narrow marine format.
A deliberately elongated format
Van Gogh probably uses a 15 format marine canvas, narrower than a conventional figure canvas. This proportion accentuates the verticality of the body and the height of the grass.
White constructed by color
The dress is never uniformly white. Thick pink touches, cool blues and green highlights give volume to the fabric while matching it to the landscape.
A few orange dots to measure the field
The small flowers do not form any precise bouquet. Their orange and pink accents punctuate the green, balance the yellow cap and place the figure at the heart of the vegetation.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Young Girl in White is an oil on canvas measuring 66.7 × 45.8 cm, painted in Auvers at the end of June 1890. It bears the inventory 1963.10.30 and the references F788/JH2055.
A 15 format marine canvas
National Gallery research considers that Van Gogh chose a marine canvas of approximately 65 × 45 cm. Its elongated shape here served a plastic intention rather than a sea landscape.
Young Girl Standing Against Wheat
The work was also published under titles describing the figure in front of a wheat field. The French title Jeune Fille en blanc already appears in the Bonger inventory of 1890.
The Chester Dale legacy of 1963
Chester Dale acquired the painting in 1951. His bequest brought the work to the National Gallery of Art in 1963, under number 1963.10.30.
