Étretat, la Manneporte, reflections on water W1038hand painted reproduction

The large arch of the Manneporte occupies almost the entire right half of the canvas. Its pink and ocher cliff plunges into a blue-purple shadow, while the sea collects yellow, green and salmon reflections around the rocks in the foreground. Painted around 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm belongs to the Musée d'Orsay under number RF 1994 5; it is deposited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Caen and corresponds to Wildenstein 1038.

Look at the work

The monumental cliff does not close the view: its arch transforms the rock into a passage of light

Monet frames the Manneporte very closely and cuts its summit from the upper edge. The dark arch descends almost to the water, but its opening reveals a clear strip of sea and sky. This tiny gap gives all its depth to the rock mass.

The cliff is never treated as a gray surface. Roses, yellows, greens and blues follow its strata, then extend into fragmented reflections. In the foreground, darker rocks provide scale and prevent bright water from becoming abstract.

The power of the Manneporte comes less from its design than from the circulation of the same colors between stone, shadow and water: the natural monument seems to change with each reflection.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Framing that amplifies scale

By removing much of the sky and bringing the cliff closer to the right edge, Monet makes the arch almost too large for the format. The small rocks and the thin marine opening reinforce this effect.

02

Shadow of ark remains colorful

Blue, purple, deep green and brown follow one another under the vault. This diversity maintains the reading of the relief and prevents a flat black from suddenly separating the rock from the sea.

03

Reflections vertically connect the composition

Under the cliff, touches of pink and yellow descend into the water among the greens. They match the upper part and the foreground while retaining the discontinuity of the chop.

Read this specific version

The single image is a real photograph of the RF 1994 5 version. The available file measures 1600 × 1200 px and is encoded as a true WebP at its native definition, without oversampling.

Composition01

Respect the exact cutout of the arch

The opening should remain narrow, high and slightly irregular. A curve that is too geometric would transform the Manneporte into architecture and reduce its natural weight.

Color02

Keep the roses warm on the cliff

They contrast with the blues of the shadow and give the bright time of the scene. A uniformly beige or gray rock would greatly impoverish this version.

Matter03

Keep reflections short and broken

The colors of the cliff are not copied into continuous vertical bands. They appear in separate touches that the greens and blues of the sea pass through.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents Étretat, la Manneporte, reflections on water, oil on canvas circa 1885, 65.5 × 81.5 cm, RF inventory 1994 5 and Wildenstein catalog 1038.

Etretat series01

Around fifty paintings between 1883 and 1886

Monet returned several times to the Cauchoise coast to follow its cliffs according to the tide, time and time. The Orsay notice lists only two views of the Manneporte in this set.

Dating02

A date established by comparison

The painting is signed lower right but does not bear a year. Its dating around 1885 is based in particular on a composition of the same dimensions kept in Philadelphia and signed 85.

Collection03

A donation in 1994 then a deposit in Caen

Pierre Larock and his family offered the work to the State in memory of Katia Granoff. Assigned to the Musée d'Orsay, it has been deposited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen since 2000.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1038 version
  • The dark arch opens onto a thin strip of sea
  • The roses and gold of the cliff
  • The green, yellow and salmon reflections of the foreground

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This view of Étretat brings a monumental presence to a living room, dining room or wide entrance. A sage green, earth pink or bluish gray wall and a light oak frame balance its contrasts without cooling the cliff.
