A large brown sail advances on the Zaan in front of a bank punctuated by mills, red houses and small boats. The very low horizon leaves an immense place for the sky; its blues, whites and yellows are repeated in the water in short touches. Monet transforms a Dutch panorama into a construction of light where each vertical of mill responds to the movement of the sailboat.

A brown sail crosses the landscape of the mills

The main boat occupies the foreground slightly to the left of the center. Its triangular sail, heavy and warm, stands out against the clear sky; the dark red hull and its reflection form a compact base. A small black boat appears on the left, closer to the edge, and introduces a second navigation ladder.

On the opposite bank, the mills follow one another like small silhouettes. One of them, larger and topped with red and white wings, dominates a group of houses with orange roofs. Horizontal reflections extend these colors into the Zaan without exactly reproducing the shapes.

The main sail advances in front of an almost miniature bank: the river becomes the main space of the painting.
