À propos de l’œuvre

Autoportrait, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · March -June 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait, F356Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh turns his head slightly and stares at the viewer with a very direct green gaze. His red beard, his jacket made of red, green and blue touches, as well as a swarm of blue marks around the skull give the small portrait concentrated energy.

Look at the work

The gaze remains fixed while the keys circulate around the face

The head emerges from a background now beige and blue. The eyes are almost at the same height and the closed mouth accentuates the serious expression; the dark bust serves as the basis for this much lighter face.

Short blue touches become denser behind the hair and ear, like an irregular halo. On the jacket, they become longer and mingle with green, red and brown in a mosaic of directions.

This Self-Portrait F356/JH1248 is an oil on cardboard measuring 41 × 33 cm painted in Paris between March and June 1887. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0065V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh uses the neo-impressionist touch here without applying it mechanically. Short marks alternate with longer lines, adapted to beard hair, the folds of the garment and the movement of the bottom.

01

The blue halo detaches the head without drawing a continuous outline

The keys thicken around the skull then space out towards the edges. This change in density is enough to move the face forward in space.

02

The beard combines complementary orange, red and green

The long strokes follow the growth of the hairs under the chin and along the cheek. A few unmixed greens make the red even brighter.

03

Jacket becomes mosaic rather than uniform fabric

Dark blue, green, red brown and small yellow touches are juxtaposed on the collar and shoulders. The material of the garment thus responds to that of the face.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F356/JH1248, the cardboard support and the inventory s0065V1962 make it possible to identify this precise version among the numerous Parisian self-portraits.

Practical

The self-portrait serves as a portrait exercise

The Van Gogh Museum recalls that he painted around thirty-five self-portraits, the majority of which in Paris. His own face allowed him to work regularly without hiring a model.

Intention

He does not seek a strictly realistic copy of his features

The museum emphasizes the expressive use of the neo-impressionist style. Colors and directions of the brush count as much as physical resemblance.

Alteration

The background was initially purple

This purple was the result of a mixture of red and blue. The red pigment has almost completely discolored and made transparent, now allowing blue marks to dominate on a light basis.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the green look, the pale skin tones, the red beard with long features, the blue touches of the halo, the white collar and the red-green mosaic of the jacket.

  • Green eyes aligned under light eyebrows
  • The long orange touches of the beard
  • The halo of blue marks around the head
  • The very thin white collar under the chin
  • The jacket composed of blue, green and red
