À propos de l’œuvre
Autoportrait sans barbe, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Self-portrait without beardReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Van Gogh depicts himself shaved, wearing a light jacket and a closed shirt. The frontal face, the green gaze and the blue background covered with horizontal touches compose a self-portrait of unusual sobriety.
Look at the work
One final face-to-face with great restraint
The bust is framed very close, almost from the front. The blue-gray jacket blends in places with the background, while the white collar and the short beard concentrate the light around the face. The eyes don't look exactly the same direction, which makes expression both direct and vulnerable.
Painted in Saint-Rémy at the end of September 1889, the painting is often considered one of Van Gogh's last self-portraits. It would have been intended for his mother for her birthday, a plausible interpretation but only history material of a work today in a private collection does not allow us to state it as an absolute certainty.
The simplicity of the garment and the background leaves plenty of room for the face, observed without heroic staging.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This version is distinguished by the absence of a beard, the light jacket buttoned high and the blue background crossed by short horizontal touches.
A very constructed face
Greens, pinks, yellows and oranges juxtapose in small touches on the skin. The contours of the jaw and skull remain sharp without completely closing the color.
A background given to the garment
The blue of the wall extends into the jacket, with grayer and lighter values. This continuity places the face in the foreground without narrative accessories.
The beard erased
The chin area, paler than usual, immediately changes the artist's appearance. Some red accents remain in the hair and around the mouth.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The painting, cataloged F525, is dated the end of September 1889 in Saint-Rémy and today belongs to a private collection.
Self-portrait as a study
Van Gogh regularly paints his own face due to lack of an available model. Each canvas allows him to examine skin color, expression and the relationship between figure and background.
Saint-Rémy, September 1889
The cold palette and the oriented touch belong to the period of the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where the artist intensely continues his work.
A work in a private collection
The original is not kept in a public museum. The sheet therefore clearly distinguishes the current location of the work from the numerous public collections with other self-portraits.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The painter must concentrate his work on resemblance, the subtle asymmetry of the gaze and the small colored touches which shape the skin without standardizing it.
- The green gaze, the position of the pupils and the arch of the eyebrows
- Pink, yellow and green touches distributed across the face
- The clear line of the collar and the buttoned blue-gray jacket
- The rhythmic continuity between the garment and the blue background
