The Zuiderkerk tower rises at the bottom of the Groenburgwal, framed by a row of trees and tall Amsterdam facades. In the foreground, the canal occupies almost half of the canvas and mixes blues, yellows and greens in small touches. Monet transforms the urban perspective into a vibration where water, buildings and sky respond to each other.
Look at the work
On the left, the nave of the church runs along the canal behind a small, light building. Its tower rises several stories to a blue-gray spire. In the center, the Staalmeestersbrug crosses the Groenburgwal; small silhouettes cross the bank and give a human scale to the architecture.
The right bank aligns narrow facades in ocher, pink, gray and green tones. They tighten towards the bottom and naturally lead the eye towards the bell tower. In the water, the reflections do not copy these shapes: blue, yellow and mauve dashes make up an autonomous and moving surface.
The perspective leads towards the Zuiderkerk, but the color circulates the gaze between the facades, the trees and the fragmented mirror of the canal.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The church on the left and the houses on the right frame a central opening. The bridge crosses this perspective just before the tower and marks an essential step between the first body of water and the distance.
The thin bell tower dominates the city while the water stretches horizontally in the foreground. Their contrast allows the composition to remain ample despite an almost square format.
Windows, gables and roofs are suggested by a few vertical and horizontal touches. Architectural precision comes from their collective rhythm, not from a detailed survey of each house.

Its floors must not be reduced to a uniform straight line. Changes in width, shadows and arrow help identify it in the bluish atmosphere.
Ochres, pinks, greens and grays are mixed with the mist. Too bold colors would move the facades forward and break their gradual retreat towards the bridge.
Yellows, blues and mauves alternate in tight dashes. The rhythm densifies downward, but never becomes a regular pattern or a simple vertical reflection.
Documented benchmarks
Dated around 1874, this oil on canvas measures 54.5 × 65.4 cm. It is kept at the Philadelphia Museum of Art under inventory W1921-1-6 and listed as Wildenstein 309.
Monet looks towards the Zuiderkerk from the canal and integrates the Staalmeestersbrug between the foreground and the church. This framing combines two major landmarks of the historic center of Amsterdam.
After his first stay in the Netherlands in 1871, Monet returned to Amsterdam in 1874. The canals, tight facades and humid light gave him a city very different from the open banks of Argenteuil.
This view belongs to a group of nearby Amsterdam studies. Its dimensions, its inventory and its angle towards the Zuiderkerk make it possible to distinguish it from the Amsterdam Canal W308, kept in a private collection.
